Just a Little Polite Rebuke... reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OmulUrsPorc · 2021-08-22 10:48 Well said. I run FreeBSD on my Pi 4 as a headless server and it’s lightening fast. I have absolutely no need for wifi so that doesn’t affect me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mosttrash · 2021-08-22 11:37 RPI4 + FreeBSD 13 for the win. NomadBSD on a dual monitor, Ryzen 9 3900X, & AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT works just as well as the RoboNuggie NomadBSD video. This machine happily hosts Window 10 via Bhyve. This is recent recent enough hardware for me. That FreeBSD works just as well on "old" hardware is extra icing on the cake. These old machines give years of service as file servers, web servers, vpn servers, the list goes on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- breakone9r · 2021-08-22 11:59 It's not a hardware issue for me. I love FreeBSD. I've used it off and on since the 90s. It works flawlessly on my Ryzen 7 5800x, and accompanying Vega 56 GPU, as well as my mainboard's built-in Intel gigabit Ethernet. 3.x USB also works fine. But I did have BT issues last time I used it. But that's mainly used to sync my phone and desktop. And isn't critical. My problem is that I'm a gamer. And last time I tried Steam on it, it didn't quite work. Now it seems there's been some more work there, so I may wind up giving it another shot there soon. In the mean time, my backup system of choice is opensuse. Those kinds of "HAH! I'm better than you"-style comments that (insert favorite OS)-fanboys make just make me want to backhand them. Use what's best for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2021-08-22 12:30 Wish there was content here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shawn_webb · 2021-08-22 13:20 My 2020 Dell Precision 7550, with 64GB ECC RAM, 8 core Intel Xeon, 2TB NVMe, runs HardenedBSD fine and dandy. My work 2020 Dell Precision 7540, with the same specs, and a discrete NVIDIA Quadro card, runs HardenedBSD and drives 2x4k monitors (+ the laptop monitor) fine and dandy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-08-22 13:38 The Foundation site is outdated. https://freebsdfoundation.org/project/zstd-integration-into-openzfs/ reportedly in progress but truly, it's complete. Support for modern hardware is improving. For a variety of AMD64 computers: where previously it was impossible to start the installer, or an installation of FreeBSD, it's now possible to start the installer with some trickery – involving an escape from the loader menu, to enter a command before boot. Unfortunately: not yet possible with FreeBSD 13.0-RELEASE or (when I last checked) STABLE.
