Freebsd upgrading/updating help.

This may be a stupid question but,

When I first installed freebsd stable (12.2), the last the stable
image had been released was in April, now however it says that the
latest image release was on 2021-may 20 4:03.

Do you need to update, and if you do, what is the specific command/
where can I find the best tutorial?

There are a few different ways, depending on the level of complexity
and control you want.  They're all covered in depth in the FreeBSD
Handbook, which I highly recommend.

These days, I tend to use freebsd-update in a cron job to download the
updates overnight for me.  That makes the actual install very quick.

That only takes care of the OS, though.  For third party software, I
tend to use pkg to install and update things.  Again, this is covered
in depth in the Handbook.  But the shirt version is "pkg install bash"
to install bash and "pkg update" and "pkg upgrade" to upgrade every
program.  This updates things about every 3 months by default.

freebsd-update does not work on Freebsd-stable.
