Turn off iMac screen reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fridder · 2021-05-21 04:03 Hello. I am wanting to repurpose an old iMac and I was wondering if there was a way to have the screen turn off automatically. My searching, etc has not yielded a lot of results mainly because it looks like the terminal driver changed recently? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2021-05-21 05:58 I'm not sure about freebsd, but I remember that linux automatically turned screen off after 30 minutes I think. You can run freebsd (installer iso without actually installing it will be enough) in virtualbox, and just leave it, and check if it's blank after 30 minutes of inactivity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nickbernstein · 2021-05-21 06:21 Unlike (most flavors of) linux, you generally shouldn't resort to googling until after you check the handbook/manual. I don't know about iMac hardware, but I assume they use standard power management: https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/config/#acpi-overview ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Max-Normal-88 · 2021-05-21 07:31 Power saving does not work on vm. Not even Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- abmrk1010 · 2021-05-21 10:32 🦠 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fridder · 2021-05-21 15:07 I’ll give this a look today. Thanks!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mattern1974 · 2021-05-21 20:46 I think it depends if you are running a desktop environment such as XFCE, GNOME, KDE, etc. Each of those has power management utilities where you can set the screen off time. If you are not running a DE, I have no knowledge as to what power management services you can run straight from the shell prompt but if you check out the manual there's most likely something.
