FreeBSD Can - Running AppImages via Linux ABI reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Slyfoxuk · 2021-05-15 13:07 Woah Woah Woah, tell me more! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glowiak · 2021-05-15 17:09 AppImages cannot be directly runt on FreeBSD. To do it, first debootstrap(8) ubuntu (any version you want), then grap the appimage and run it with --appimage-extract option, then go to squashfs-root directory and run AppRun script. Note that not all appimages works. In this example I'm running Minetest hacked client compiled for Linux and packed as AppImage. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2021-05-15 17:09 Whats AppImages? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glowiak · 2021-05-15 17:10 You also should add 'ubuntu\_enable="YES"' and 'linux\_enable="NO"' to /etc/rc.conf ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aue_sum · 2021-05-15 18:43 A Linux packaging format that bundles all dependencies along with all binaries into one file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kraileth · 2021-05-15 18:46 AppImage is a container format for distributing applications in a portable way (think PBI if you're familiar with what PCBSD did back in the day). It originated on Linux, however its creator has switched to FreeBSD a while ago and did at least a proof of concept of AppImage for FreeBSD. It's likely that this approach will be used for helloSystem eventually. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antoarre · 2021-05-15 19:12 Being able to run AppImages on FreeBSD is the one thing that I've been looking forward to since I saw mentions of it on a github thread. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-05-15 19:20 https://docs.appimage.org/ | https://appimage.org/ | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppImage ---------------------------------------------------------------------- portresiolmayanadam · 2021-05-15 20:15 what is your desktop? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- patovm04 · 2021-05-16 03:01 Please be aware that by default 'ubuntu\_enable="YES"' is not valid and does not exist, unless you follow certain alternative guides available on the internet that make you create that custom "ubuntu" rc.d script... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-05-16 06:25 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glowiak · 2021-05-16 07:33 The Motif Window Manager ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glowiak · 2021-05-16 07:34 OH NO (unable to mount squashfs root) ANYWAY (extract it and run with Linux ABI) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xerxero · 2021-05-16 09:18 I think it’s similar as what an .app is on OS X or a fat jar/binary. A folder structure with all library needed for this application ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Daedalus312 · 2021-05-16 11:44 These are extra crutches. It would be nice if this software format was supported natively by the FreeBSD OS without including the Linux compatibility layer and the Ubuntu emulator. If I need Ubuntu, then I will just install this OS on my computer. If I need Windows OS, I'll just install it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- abmrk1010 · 2021-05-16 15:58 🍥 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeverSawAvatar · 2021-05-17 14:54 >The Motif Window Manager Wow... That's not a crutch, the app images are Linux compiled binaries, that's like saying wine is a crutch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Daedalus312 · 2021-05-18 11:23 Yes, it's an unnecessary crutch. Why do I need Wine if I can install Windows as a second operating system? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- probonopd · 2021-05-30 18:19 Work is underway in the FreeBSD Linuxulator to make --appimage-extract unneccessary: https://github.com/AppImage/AppImageKit/issues/98
