PxE install without NFS reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- polkamonx · 2021-05-13 18:08 Both NetBSD and OpenBSD can be installed fine by just using regular TFTP and pxeboot yet as my research shows: [https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/install-over- pxe.22087/](https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/install-over- pxe.22087/) FreeBSD cannot. I have tried: `LABEL FreeBSD 13.0 (64-bit)` `KERNEL memdisk` `APPEND iso initrd=installers/bsd/freebsd/13.0/amd64/installer raw` The image boots in but then it dies at the rootfs mounting. Anyone knows a way to pxe install this only regular tftp? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lkowolowski · 2021-05-13 18:23 I suspect youre having issues with size. Ive had that in the past where images smaller than perhaps 200MB work and images larger don't work. You can use regular ftp instead ---------------------------------------------------------------------- polkamonx · 2021-05-13 22:09 The size has nothing to do with it. In that case if the ram is not enough it could simply not load the image and that boot only is relatively small 300MB. I have other isos like PartedMagic which is 700mb regular cd iso and I can pxeload it with tftp with no problem. How would you use ftp? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lkowolowski · 2021-05-14 00:52 https://www.tecmint.com/install-pxe-network-boot-server-in-centos-7/ The method= part You'll need to have anon ftp setup, but thats not complicated ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2021-05-14 07:05 You can use mfsbsd. It's small freebsd image that loads itself to RAM. You can also modify it (put /etc/rc.local) to automate installation, since installing freebsd boils down to partition disks, install bootcode, extract 2 TARs, create fstab and rc.conf. If you are interested, I can provide more info when I finish my work in about 7 hours ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mj_turner · 2021-05-14 09:37 This. I've had good luck PXE booting mfsBSD images using tftp/http only (using iPXE). In particular, I use [Martin Matuška's images](https://mfsbsd.vx.sk/). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- polkamonx · 2021-05-15 08:33 Thanks this looks promising however there is no i386 version provided what I need :( Also it looks like that the builder tool itself needs FreeBSD: FreeBSD 11 or higher installed, tested on i386 or amd64 I would run it on my linux laptop to generate iso from the i386 version of FreeBSD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2021-05-15 08:40 You can install i386 freebsd on amd64 platform (but you won't be able to use more than 4GB of ram), and then generate mfsbsd. And yes, the build tool needs freebsd, but you can run it in qemu/kvm on your laptop
