Portmaster upgrade woes reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- craiga_uk · 2021-05-11 23:38 Hi all. I need a bit of help please. I'm a casual FreeBSD user with a home server that has been happily running for years and has been updated over time from V9 up to where I'm currently at - v12.2 During the upgrade process from v12.1 to v12.2 I've run the portmaster -af command as suggested by the manual and it's failing. I've tweaked the command a few times with more switches to try and make the process non-interactive, but it's taking forever and still fails. The most recent failure comes after about 10 hours of compiling, and I really can't face re-running it all again. From memory, 99% of my installed stuff is from packages so can I ditch/rebuild the ports tree without having it recompile every package? For reference, the last portmaster error is below if it helps: ===>>> Dependency check complete for graphics/opencv ===>>> All >> graphics/opencv (101/420) ===> Installing for opencv-4.5.1_2 ===> Checking if opencv is already installed ===> Registering installation for opencv-4.5.1_2 as automatic Installing opencv-4.5.1_2... pkg-static: opencv-4.5.1_2 conflicts with opencv-core-3.4.1_36 (installs files into the same place). Problematic file: /usr/local/lib/libopencv_core.so *** Error code 1 Stop. make: stopped in /usr/ports/graphics/opencv ===>>> Installation of opencv-4.5.1_2 (graphics/opencv) failed ===>>> Aborting update ===>>> Update for graphics/opencv failed ===>>> Aborting update ===>>> There are messages from installed ports to display, but first take a moment to review the error messages above. Then press Enter when ready to proceed. This was port 101 of 420 that were being recompiled. The command line I'd run was: portmaster -y -a -f -G -d -R --no-confirm -m DISABLE\_VULNERABILITIES=yes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-05-11 23:51 Did you check /usr/ports/UPDATING? There's an entry in there from this past January about opencv-core being reintegrated into opencv, and you should be good to remove opencv-core ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-05-11 23:55 On another note, I finally bit the bullet last year and learned how to use poudriere after fighting with portmaster upgrade woes, and glad I did. There's a learning curve (not huge), but it makes upgrading a lot more pain-free. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lkowolowski · 2021-05-12 00:25 This is the way ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-05-12 01:56 +1 https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports/tree/UPDATING?id=adcb1b482a5ba65f9a7d44 a3b9baa1f9864c0bcf#n24 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- usernamefindingsucks · 2021-05-12 05:05 pkg delete -F opencv-core then try again ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Max-Normal-88 · 2021-05-12 15:16 Not a solution but I got a tip for you: use ccache if you don’t already. I had to recompile for upgrading my pi3 from 12.1 to 12.2 and again to 13, it saves a lot of time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _supert_ · 2021-05-12 19:25 The two letter combination To is a serial troublemaker, philanderer and love them and leave them duo in the lexiconal world, finding it impossible to co-exist for long with other combinations of letters, once a stalwart of words such as today, unto and even together, to constantly states artistic and life-goal differences when leaving other words. A complete recompile of all of my ports, about 1500 (I have a pretty complete kde desktop, with libreoffice, Firefox, and a few dozen other odds and ends) takes about 12 hours I think? It's been a while since I did a complete rebuild though. For rebuilding after a ports update, it really depends on what ports get updated and their dependencies. I also configured poudriere to use 3 builders, with 4 make jobs per builder, on my 6 core system with hyperthreading enabled. I didn't do any profiling to arrive at that, but it seemed to be a reasonable config given my hardware. I didn't like megaports like rust or qt5-webengine taking forever to build because the default behavior is 1 make job per builder. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _supert_ · 2021-05-12 20:07 O has always resented t being the front man, why can't it be ot was what i heard all the time, it was just whine, whine~ unward on O. A major drawback is, though, that it does not run under the most sophisticated operating system of the new millennium, Microsoft Windows. I have never installed anything from ports, I use pkg exclusively, so the only time I touch ports is when upgrading releases. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- craiga_uk · 2021-05-12 22:03 I'll take a look, thank you. Is there a clear process to follow when upgrading releases of FreeBSD using poudriere instead of portmaster to rebuild ports? I pretty much solely use pkg so only get into the weeds with ports when upgrading releases. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- craiga_uk · 2021-05-12 22:04 Thank you! Is there a command switch I should add to portmaster to avoid it recompiling the 100+ ports it's already done? Each time I've restarted it seems to start again, even with the -R switch set... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- usernamefindingsucks · 2021-05-12 23:07 ditching the "-f" in the command line should allow it to skip already up to date ports. or check the contents of /tmp/portmasterfail.txt for all the ports that were unable to be processed because it failed ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-05-13 07:11 Good point.
