How to disable sleep on my desktop with Freebsd 13? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chuckremes · 2021-04-26 13:41 I'm running a Gigabyte X99 Ultra Gaming motherboard with an Intel 5960x. I just upgraded from 12.2 to 13.0 and now my system goes to sleep after a few minutes when I don't touch the keyboard or mouse. I'm in gnome3 and checked the power settings but it only offers configuration for my display which I have set to never sleep. I'm trying to figure out how to disable sleep altogether, but google- fu has failed me. Here are the values of my \`sysctl hw.acpi\`: $ sysctl hw.acpi hw.acpi.cpu.cx\_lowest: C1 hw.acpi.reset\_video: 0 hw.acpi.handle\_reboot: 1 hw.acpi.disable\_on\_reboot: 0 hw.acpi.verbose: 0 hw.acpi.s4bios: 0 hw.acpi.sleep\_delay: 1 hw.acpi.suspend\_state: S3 hw.acpi.standby\_state: NONE hw.acpi.lid\_switch\_state: NONE hw.acpi.sleep\_button\_state: S3 hw.acpi.power\_button\_state: S5 hw.acpi.supported\_sleep\_state: S3 S4 S5 How do I disable sleep? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gospelofmillim · 2021-04-26 13:42 I could be mistaken, but x set s off && xset -dpms should do it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- avgapon · 2021-04-26 14:47 What exactly do you mean by 'sleep' ? FreeBSD itself never enters sleep states (S1, S3) without a user action. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chuckremes · 2021-04-26 15:44 Now says DPMS disabled which I guess is a start. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chuckremes · 2021-04-26 15:45 It's suspending to disk and turning itself off which I believe corresponds to S5. I have to hit the power button for it to resume. It all comes back up again (usually) but I don't want it to go into S3 or S5 \_at all\_. I don't mind the screen turning off after some set period. But I do not want the CPU and disks to go to sleep. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DotOdex · 2021-04-26 16:33 For Gnome you should do: gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive- ac-timeout 0 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-04-26 17:11 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chuckremes · 2021-04-26 19:18 This command worked. Thank you for the assist. Seems odd to me that the window manager / desktop manager would be in charge of this. I figured I could prevent it at the kernel level by disabling the acpi power mechanism, but I guess not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- avgapon · 2021-04-27 08:40 S5 is a power off (shutdown). S4, FreeBSD does not support. So, it is likely S3. It really must be something in the DE (gnome3) or other third-party software. Vanilla FreeBSD never auto-suspends. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chuckremes · 2021-04-27 19:53 Thanks to everyone who responded. The correct answer was to adjust the desktop manager to disable DPMS. In my case, it was gnome (see the command in this thread). I added that to my shell's .rc and all is well.
