How To Install FreeBSD with KDE Plasma 5 [2021] reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glowiak · 2021-03-17 08:52 bruh every FreeBSD user knows how to install kde on it (and everybody knows that on 11.x and 12.x there's no drivers) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- breakone9r · 2021-03-17 08:57 Step 1: boot FreeBSD installer. Step 2: follow the handbook for installing FreeBSD. Step 3: boot new FreeBSD system and log in. Step 4: follow the handbook for installing plasma. This ain't rocket science, bruh. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-03-17 09:07 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hobthrust · 2021-03-17 10:25 I don't know why people are being such dicks, this is genuinely useful. I'm new to FreeBSD from Linux and just following the handbook has left me with a system that is usable but still full of annoying niggles. The handbook is great for finding stuff that you know you need to look for, but what about when you don't know what to look for? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- goldfluss · 2021-03-17 10:29 The more documentation available, the better it is. I agree with you! 👍🏻 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-03-17 10:38 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-03-17 10:39 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- goldfluss · 2021-03-17 10:39 I appreciate your work putting the informations together ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 10:57 Thank you! I really appreciate any feedback. I have put quite a bit of work into this guide and other similar ones. I just genuinely want to help the UNIX/FreeBSD community to grow. That's all. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 10:59 This guide is not aimed at FreeBSD users necessarily. There are many people in the Linux, macOS, and Windows communities willing to explore the UNIX world. Heck, I was one of them 3-4 years ago. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 11:00 Thank you! Never thought FreeBSD love can be so strong :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 11:01 That's what I try to do on my website. Open the amazing UNIX/FreeBSD a bit more to the world. It's such a great OS... It deserves a lot more! Anyway, I know I will get a bit of hate on the way but who cares, the FreeBSD love is overwhelming :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 11:02 Thank you! Such feedbacks make me work harder and write better about everything, including UNIX/FreeBSD. You guys made my day/week! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 11:03 Thanks for your feedback. Appreciate it! :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hobthrust · 2021-03-17 11:07 I know how you feel, I wrote a blog post about trying to set up OpenBSD on a Pi and some people weren't happy about it... just ignore them! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 11:14 What about non-FreeBSD users willing to try UNIX? Drivers? Thanks for the feedback, though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- goldfluss · 2021-03-17 11:26 It’s not long ago, when I tried for the first time FreeBSD. The documentation is already good, but sometimes additional informations are needed and then you begin to lose time in searching them ... Often I found the answers in this kind of blogs :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hippy2094 · 2021-03-17 11:28 I was not aware of the desktop-installer package, that's quite handy! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 11:34 Precisely. That happened to me not long ago when I started to use FreeBSD as my daily driver. And I still look for information on blogs, Quora, Reddit even now after a few years of using the OS. So I thought to do something to help the community :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 11:37 Thanks! Yes, when I discovered it, it was such a great finding! You can install quite a lot of DE and WMs with desktop-installer. Also, it installs the latest audio/video drivers available for FreeBSD + all the necessary configurations automatically. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glowiak · 2021-03-17 11:51 Number of Arch install tutorials: 999999999999999999999999999999999 Number of FreeBSD install tutorials: 988908078980798789 Number of Gentoo install tutorials: 7 (lol) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 11:59 I would like to read that! :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hobthrust · 2021-03-17 12:24 Well, you asked for it: [https://hobthrust.wordpress.com/2021/03/10/openbsd-on-a-raspberry- pi-3b/](https://hobthrust.wordpress.com/2021/03/10/openbsd-on-a- raspberry-pi-3b/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xerxero · 2021-03-17 12:49 Great write up. If I had to make 1 addition I would add the newly created user to wheel AND video group. I guess the desktop package takes care of that but it might be useful for other users going for the manual route ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 12:51 That's a cool article man! Bookmarked it! I'm working on writing something new now but I'll give it a try on the weekend! Thanks for sharing! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubenerd · 2021-03-17 12:54 And yet, not being a dick *is* rocket science, “bruh”? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hobthrust · 2021-03-17 13:02 Thanks! Still working on my wireless issues, once I have an update I'll write another post. The internal wireless on the Pi runs really badly on OpenBSD - I wonder if it would be the same on FreeBSD? Might have to try it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 13:11 Thank you! That's a great suggestion - I will add to the guide. Appreciate your suggestion! :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 13:46 Will try to get FreeBSD on a Pi this weekend and let you know if the wifi is ok. Have you tried with USB wifi? RTL8812AU chipsets are automatically recognized by the FreeBSD installer while in Linux I have to install the driver manually... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hobthrust · 2021-03-17 14:08 I tried a Ralink adapter which works pretty well but has no hostap mode support, and I was wanting to use the Pi as a wireless network extender. I did some research and got an Atheros device which should be great but it crashes the Pi instantly under OpenBSD, although it is fine with Raspbian or OpenBSD on a laptop. Bit stuck with that at the moment! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 14:19 Try FreeBSD. I had better success with drivers than OpenBSD - though I enjoyed OB quite a lot! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hobthrust · 2021-03-17 14:21 It's worth a try! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msouza_rj · 2021-03-17 15:23 Also suggest to include the user to operator group ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msouza_rj · 2021-03-17 15:38 Congrats for the great material! Get ready to update it for version 13.0, soon to be released. Just installed today following the handbook instructions and it looks gorgeous with KDE Plasma. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 16:02 Awesome to hear that! I have my "pen and paper" prepared for the 13.0 release and another cool guide! FreeBSD deserves the best! :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-17 16:16 Excellent, thank you! Just updated the guide to include the operator group too :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- teksimian · 2021-03-17 17:34 blog needs more juicy plasma screenshots good job ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xerxero · 2021-03-17 20:11 What additional rights does a user get with operator besides wheel? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rizzzeh · 2021-03-17 21:11 Looks like a great easy to follow guide wish i had it when I was installing FreeBSD for first time a month ago, also with KDE. My constructive comments would be - balena etcher is a shady piece of software for something simple like DD. https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/issues/2977 Desktop-installer doesnt install minimal kde but a rather heafty bundle of packages, on my install i went with plasma5-plasma and added few other packages, might be a good idea of indicate in the guide what KDE apps are bundled in with this installer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Melodic_Ad_8747 · 2021-03-17 22:03 Toxic behavior won't grow the FreeBSD community. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msouza_rj · 2021-03-17 22:15 Handle devices ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amoohesam · 2021-03-17 23:40 Nice and detailed article. Thank you so much! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- system-user · 2021-03-18 00:51 it's not much different to get running on 13. I've been using it since 13-CURRENT and haven't run into any issues that couldn't be solved by reading commit changes and iterating the associated configs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-18 02:13 Agree! I am working on a KDE ricing for FreeBSD blog post :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-18 02:14 Cool! I think is time for an upgrade :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-18 02:14 Glad you found it useful! Many thanks for checking it out! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-18 02:17 Thank you so much! Working on a few other articles on BSD on my blog and hoping more and more people will join this community! Agree with all your constructive comments. Though I never had problems with Etcher, I read some people had and it's probably time to look into an alternative or simply using the dd command. Also agree on the desktop-installer. It has minimal GNOME but not minimal KDE. Will try to see if something can be done. Thanks a lot for your reply - genuinely appreciate it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Aeze2eith · 2021-03-18 10:25 Thanks for the guide, it's really helpful. Yesterday I have tried with 13.0-RC2 and your howto was working OOTB. Thanks again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-03-18 10:36 That's awesome! Thanks a lot for this reply - appreciate it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hobthrust · 2021-03-19 00:28 FreeBSD runs very nicely on my RPi... but no support for the wireless adapter I have! Back to the start ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexenta81 · 2021-04-17 09:52 Update: Guide tested and updated for [FreeBSD 13](https://leonardcucos.com/how-to-install-freebsd-13-0-with-kde- plasma-5/) Enjoy! :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Independent-Boss794 · 2022-07-25 00:48 Looks like this guide is no longer available...bummer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ladoublery · 2022-09-06 19:09 [web archive of guide](https://web.archive.org/web/20210314142000/http s://leonardcucos.com/how-to-install-freebsd-with-kde-plasma-5-2021/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Independent-Boss794 · 2022-12-07 07:33 Thank you @ladoublery!
