Free Servers For Students? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lozinski · 2021-02-28 20:45 Microsoft, AWS, Alibaba and sort of Google have free 1 Gig Linux servers for students. What a terrible idea. Soon we will have all these servers running 24x7 wasting energy, and creating CO2. What makes much more sense is for each student to get their own FreeBSD jail for 2 hours a day. Go to a web site, click a button, start the server, then login. It would take 1/10 the energy of 24 x 7 Linux servers. Is there anyone in the FreeBSD community who might host such servers? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- desnudopenguino · 2021-02-28 21:01 I'm pretty sure in all those cases, the hardware is running anyway for the other higher services so it wouldn't make a big difference with power consumption. Also it is the freebie to get people in the doors in those ecosystems. You can't get a good feel for how everything works in the aws ecosystem with regard to their ec2 instances without running an ec2 service. Though a jail based "free" service wouldn't be bad. You can limit cpu and ram in the jails as well iirc. It might be a good intro for a FreeBSD based service provider. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- r_notfound · 2021-02-28 21:14 Pretty sure that's virtualized, similar to what the jails would be. KVM-based virtualization isn't all that much heavier than a jail anyhow. In terms of hours per day, I know I'd get annoyed if it was only available for a couple of hours. I don't know of any current hosting providers offering what you describe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Max-Normal-88 · 2021-02-28 21:21 Let me introduce you to virtualization ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2021-02-28 22:07 AWS is not an OS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scratchifoo · 2021-02-28 23:58 You could do something like www.anonvdi.ca does. This is Linux using docker, but take same concept and use freebsd with jails...and make the jails public and expose some ports. The tech for this is defintely there, just a matter of someone making it publicly available like these guys do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Independent-Meat-994 · 2021-03-01 02:08 want to use mine? edit: whoops, forgot mine uses ubuntu (gross i know) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lozinski · 2021-03-01 07:04 AWS EC2 to be precise. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2021-03-01 12:40 EC2 is not an operating system either. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- R-ten-K · 2021-03-01 21:33 Is this sarcasm? Do you really think every student gets their own private server running 24/7? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lozinski · 2021-03-02 09:56 That is my reading of the documentation. 750 Free hours a month. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- R-ten-K · 2021-03-02 10:16 Your comprehension of said documentation is pretty poor then. They spin virtual server instances on demand, which can be ran for a maximum of 750 hrs. You don't get a physical server running 24/7 just for one student. Perhaps you don;t understand how these cloud providers work? Basically a physical server runs multiple of these virtual instances, and when they are not used the instance is put to sleep. The solution you thought of is not novel. Multiple students will be sharing a single physical server somewhere in the cloud at any given point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lozinski · 2021-03-02 11:09 Thank you for that correction. Most appreciated. Also it appears that those machines only provide temporary storage. You have to store you files separately on some file storage server.
