Bit confused about Freebsd 13 version reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CorenBrightside · 2021-02-12 22:18 I am trying to get my Ryzen Zen 2 3900X and Vega 64 to work with freebsd. I understand some people have compiled some special drivers for 12.2 but I thought I would just keep trying to get 13 working but I am honstly confused about the versions. I tried to update 13.0 Alpha to Beta last weekend with little success. Is it better to use 13.0-CURRENT than the latest version available or will I still run into problem upgrading to the newer testing version when it's released? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- michaelfatbender · 2021-02-12 22:36 AFAIK you'll still run into problems when 13 is released. I don't think the freebsd-update tool supports alpha/beta updates... But I could be wrong. I'm running 13 alpha 1 on my laptop and I have resigned self to waiting until March for another install of freebsd 13. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FUZxxl · 2021-02-12 23:04 freebsd-update certainly supports beta releases. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- system-user · 2021-02-12 23:31 depends what isn't working on your system. have you reviewed the change logs and release notes? it's pretty common to have to troubleshoot low level issues and hunt down configuration changes when working with an alpha or beta. If 13-current was working you'll need to see which changes were introduced between versions and determine if any of them affect your hardware or system configuration. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-02-12 23:32 ### AMD Radeon > … Vega 64 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_RX_Vega_series ### Drivers > I understand some people have compiled some special drivers for 12.2 … I see your https://redd.it/lc8fwo but I can't tell what you mean by special drivers. ### -CURRENT > `13.0-CURRENT` That's no longer available; https://www.freebsd.org/releases/13.0R/schedule/ I use `14.0-CURRENT` with (old) Radeon hardware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rhavenn · 2021-02-13 01:50 That used to be true. FreeBSD-update now handles update from beta versions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- distalzou · 2021-02-13 09:09 FreeBSD 13.0-BETA1 wasn't included in the freebsd-update process for some reason (some technical issue with the realease). FreeBSD 13.0-BETA2 is fully supported by freebsd-update though, so I would advise you use BETA2. The vega 64 should work okay with drm- fbsd13-kmod. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CorenBrightside · 2021-02-13 10:48 > I see your https://redd.it/lc8fwo but I can't tell what you mean by special drivers. My apologies, I should have been clearer. When trying to troubleshoot the microstuttering issue, I came across some people discussing same thing for Vega 56 on FreeBSD forums. Someone had gotten to working by editing the driver, commenting things out before compiling but I couldn't find the edits anymore. I might try 14-CURRENT I saw it was available for download. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vermaden · 2021-02-13 10:49 Its like that: **13-CURRENT => 13-STABLE => 13.0-ALPHA\* => 13.0-BETA\* => 13.0-RC\* => 13.0-RELEASE**. When 13.0-ALPHA\* is available the means that there is now 13-STABLE and 14-CURRENT and 13-CURRENT no longer exists. Hope that helps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CorenBrightside · 2021-02-13 10:52 I should have been clearer my bad. The issue is that Vega 64 doesn't work in 12.2 because of a kernel bug it seems so it kernel panics. In 13 it almost works, but has an annoying microstuttering where the whole X seems to freeze for 1-2ths of a second. Only thing not affected is audio it seems. Youtube or local video freezes, audio keeps going. Mouse cursor etc all freezes. This is what I am trying to figure out and stop before settling down with freebsd again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CorenBrightside · 2021-02-13 12:38 Thanks, that actually explains it quite well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beowuff · 2021-02-13 18:23 Okay, so I went through this with FreeBSD 12.2 on my t430. The drm drivers on 12 are compiled on 12.1 so have issues on 12.2. You need to grab ports and compile the drm package. Once 12.1 is eol, drm will be compiled on 12.2 and the package can just be installed. On 13.0 betas (and future) you can just install the drm package. I would install beta 2 and see if it works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CorenBrightside · 2021-02-13 19:17 On 13 it works to the sense it boots, gives GUI etc (until I build a GENERIC-NODEBUG kernel). But it still has the stuttering. It seems to get worse the longer the system runs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beowuff · 2021-02-13 19:36 So, I wouldn't compile my own kernel unless you REALLY need to. It makes troubleshooting things MUCH harder. On the 13 Beta install, did you do something like "pkg install drm- kmod". This should install the latest video drivers. You will then need to enable them in /etc/rc.conf. On 12.2, instead of pkg install drm-kmod, you need to get the ports. "cd /usr/ports/graphics/drm-current-kmod" and run "make install clean". Then, enable it in the /etc/rc.conf. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CorenBrightside · 2021-02-13 20:34 I wanted to try and remove all debugging just to see if it was interfering somehow and causing the microstuttering. On 13, I slammed though the normal installer. Did "cd /usr/ports/graphics/drm-fbsd13-kmod && make install clean" I I think I tried to make the pkg on ALPHA but after that didn't really work I just went along with making it. I changed the /boot/loader.rc and /etc/rc.conf accordingly to instructions in the console. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-02-14 07:20 > … drm drivers on 12 are compiled on 12.1 … For FreeBSD repositories, this is no longer true. https://pkg-status.freebsd.org/builds?type=package seek *122*, all six are done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beowuff · 2021-02-14 15:29 Oh, nice! It’s been awhile since I installed 12.2. It looked like it was causing a lot of people issues. Glad it’s been taken care of. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-02-14 18:02 > FreeBSD-update now handles update from beta versions.
