How stable is FreeBSD compared to debian? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-12-25 17:21 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gumnos · 2020-12-25 17:33 sameish? I used to run Debian, leaving mostly because they started departing from things that felt like Unix-as-I-know-it (systemd, `netstat`→`ss`, `ifconfig`→`ip`, `man`→`info`, deprecating `nslookup`, removing `ed` from the base install, etc). But stability hasn't been an issue on either end. The only stability-related issues I've had on either Debian or FreeBSD involved failing hardware. And when that failing hardware was the disk-drive, having FreeBSD on ZFS gives me a confidence in the integrity of my on-disk data (I can `zpool scrub` as a `cron` job, helping prevent bit-rot) that I never got with Debian. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-12-25 17:35 Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rhabarba · 2020-12-25 18:35 Very much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DiggyTroll · 2020-12-25 18:37 There are other aspects to stability. While I've enjoyed good reliability with both Linux distros and \[Free,Open,Net\]BSD in production, I prefer working with the BSDs. They still respect established engineering principles and try to model an elegant simplicity. For instance, FreeBSD has a more stable userland by its centralized nature. Linux distros suffer from more upstream breakage (in my experience working the occasional weekend). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItWasBadTouchLOL · 2020-12-25 18:49 Do it and find out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-12-25 18:53 thanks, how is the support for nvidia cards? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SweetBeanBread · 2020-12-25 19:30 ya... i don’t think anyone here’s going to say freebsd’s stability sucks, use Debian ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whitepixe1 · 2020-12-25 20:15 Depends on the use case. I use both Debian & FreeBSD, dual boot. In the server area both Debian & FreeBSD are rock stable, and the preferences are purely self choice which one to use. In the desktop area, again Debian & FreeBSD are solid stable, however Debian vastly supersedes FreeBSD in both hardware compatibility and amount of packages in every possible area of use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DiggyTroll · 2020-12-26 02:28 I've used nVidia in FreeBSD workstations in the past, but only run headless servers now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- subsynq · 2020-12-26 08:13 For what it's worth, I've seen an internal freebsd server running 2009-2018 without a single restart (no power interruption either), so I guess it's stable enough if you know what you're doing... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-12-26 08:27 can i use grub to dual boot debian and freebsd? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mzs47 · 2020-12-26 10:46 Yes, I use grub, but with MBR.
