Managed to royally hose system during failed upgrade reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phosix 路 2020-12-24 05:53 What happened: I had built a ZFS file server for my ~~unlawful~~ in- laws many, many years ago with an old Celeron. A few years ago the board failed to boot under 10.2 or later, so I just let it sit. At some point, Windows decided it didn't like the old version of Samba anymore, and as far as my in-laws were concerned the server was "broken". For the holidays I pulled together some newer spare bits, and upgraded it to a second gen core i5. With the CPU and mobo upgraded I began the task of upgrading from 10.1 to 12.2. Except I missed a point where freebsd-update *explicitly warned me* to remove 3rd party libraries before proceeding. Predictably, things broke. At first it seemed recoverable, freebsd- update rollback had never failed me before. Freebsd-update rollback spit out the error on the screen, and would not proceed with reinstalling the updates. No problem, we'll just reboot... And now we're at the posted screen 馃檭 Now it's time to scrounge up some USB boot media and start over. The lesson to take away here: don't fall into autopilot and just rush through steps. **Read all the notices**! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arvedarved 路 2020-12-24 07:06 /rescue/sh should still work. It is statical linked ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItWasBadTouchLOL 路 2020-12-24 12:50 Yeah, everything in rescue is statically linked, it should be just enough to unfuck your system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dlangille 路 2020-12-24 18:43 Even after years of doing this, I still use a list of steps to follow. There is no shame in reading & following the steps every time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phosix 路 2020-12-24 22:30 Thanks for the reminder /rescue exists! One ZFS snapshot rollback and we're back in business!
