Why BSD over Linux? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- alexishdez_lmL · 2020-11-15 06:57 I'm a Linux enthusiast tempted to hop to the BSD scene, why you prefer it over Linux? Edit: Thanks to everyone, now I decided to switch to freeBSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jurrehart · 2020-11-15 09:01 In general they are whole OS kernel + userspace, whereas Linux in reality is just the kernel and distros slap the rest onto it to create the distros. Additionally for me I am not that happy about the scope creep on systemd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- masterblaster0 · 2020-11-15 09:48 I like FreeBSD because it has a very "Keep It Simple Stupid" feel to it, and that's something that used to apply to Linux but has disappeared over the years. Now it's more like Android with settings buried behind settings buried behind more settings, a needless complexity for simple things which starts to feel engineered, as though a level of obscurity is being created between the OS and the user. This article highlights what I mean, specifically the part about NIC aggregation https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2020/09/07/quare-freebsd but you could just as easily apply the mount and audio situation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaxVerevkin · 2020-11-15 11:04 There are void and artix for those who don't like systemd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m-kru · 2020-11-15 11:07 You mean over engineered? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -kilix- · 2020-11-15 12:58 I was curious and I wanted to learn about OSes. I like the history of UNIXes, which naturally led me to FreeBSD. I was using Linux since 2.4. Now as I know more about it, I can probably tell you what I like the most about it: 1. It's simple and straightforward (a lot simpler than for example arch linux, which is really simple and bloat-free among linuxes) 2. It's very well documented, man pages are actually really useful. 3. ZFS 4. Ports system and package management is very well implemented, which goes hand-in-hand with: 5. Separation of the base OS and packages. 6. The community is really great. 7. Rock-stable, solid, updates to the system are done according to "POLA" - principle of least astonishment. I could probably go on a bit more, but those are the points that immedialy pop to mind. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- caledooper · 2020-11-15 16:47 I'll take "over-engineered" over "hay guyz, look at what else I've managed to bolt on!" any day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m-kru · 2020-11-15 17:04 Can you elaborate? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- caledooper · 2020-11-15 18:18 Sure: systemd. Your turn: why is it you think that FreeBSD is over-engineered? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m-kru · 2020-11-15 18:27 Ohh no, I was speaking about Linux. He has written >a needless complexity for simple things which starts to feel engineered whilst he should have used over-engineered term. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-11-15 22:46 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- caledooper · 2020-11-16 04:45 Ahhh. Lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yaazkal · 2020-11-17 19:29 My personal reason is simplicity. Also I do really liked ZFS and jails. Both comes with the OS. You are at blame for my lowered productivity! :) (thanks a lot) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yaazkal · 2020-11-18 12:43 Good to know!
