I'm not sure I'd want to run a make buildworld && make buildkernel on
a sd card. I disable local logging on my rpi's just to extend the life
of my sd cards.

He does the buildworld/buildkernel on a different system and disk (x86
PC it seems) and then installworld/installkernel to the SD card.

You can also run  buildworld/buildkernel on NFS remote disk.
