FreeBSD Chromium Alternative? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-19 13:53 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shawn_webb · 2020-10-19 14:53 I used Iridium for a while. The problem is that they typically run a bit far behind Chromium, which means that deployments of Iridium contain public vulnerabilities that latest Chromium releases have fixed. So while Iridium may be better with regards to not sending private data to Google et al, it's a less secure browser from a security vulnerability perspective. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FUZxxl · 2020-10-19 16:05 Not sure what you are talking about. Chromium works just fine on FreeBSD and is packaged. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Daedalus312 · 2020-10-19 16:53 What's wrong with Chromium on FreeBSD? I use it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- breakone9r · 2020-10-19 17:02 firefox with ublock origin, and duck duck go privacy essentials, sync turned off. Done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-19 21:28 It tends to dissappear from the repos from time to time. You just got lucky, or built it from source. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flying_gel · 2020-10-19 21:39 This was useful for me, I've run into the removal of chromium from the binary packages repository. Unfortunately I have to use a webapp that, while doesn't explicitly block Firefox, is sufficiently broken to be unusable. I never investigated alternatives or the reason why chromium was removed, I just jumped in my wife's laptop for this specific app. I'll give this fork a go next time. Edit: To those who say that it's available, is this a quarterly vs latest binary package issue? Or if a binary package is removed from the repo and you already installed before, it does it stay installed? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Daedalus312 · 2020-10-21 14:19 Many programs from the repository have this tendency due to broken dependencies after updates. Until they are completely reassembled. Firefox, Telegram Desktop, Double Commander etc I saw yesterday in our russian telegram chat information that many programs are broken again. I'm already afraid to update packages. LOL ))) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dali-clone-3dot-zero · 2020-10-27 10:49 Thanks for another useful & informative video. I've recommended your channel to several friends now to encourage them to check out the range of BSD desktops & to encourage them to see how easy it can be, to use FreeBSD :-)
