FreeBSD serves Netflix video with OpenConnect reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-10-13 12:02 [Netflix case study](https://freebsdfoundation.org/blog/freebsd-case- study-netflix/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dlangille · 2020-10-13 13:47 Yes. Yes it does. Everything before you press play, is running on AWS. After pressing play, that's all coming from a FreeBSD server, most likely in your ISP datacenter. They upload new content to those hosts during quiet times. They let drives die. Content is lost? No big deal, here it is over on this other server. No caching. All read directly from disk. Why no caching? The volume is such that you don't know what will be requested next. Sure, yes, the next thing your player wants can be predicted, but you're not alone. There are many other players in use. Caching is not used. Each video is available in many formats and resolutions. What you play on your phone is [probably] a different video from your tablet or your TV or your laptop. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antiduh · 2020-10-13 17:09 That website is the most annoying thing in the world. No, I don't want to physically simulate reading a magazine just to read about this case study. I can barely operate this thing in mobile. Just let me scroll you crappy website. Get this 'solution looking for a problem' crap out of here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wing-Tsit_Chong · 2020-10-13 17:21 Couldn't have said it better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-10-13 19:51 Which has nothing to do with anything but you had to chime in. Of course, this is reddit and I wouldn't expect anything else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antiduh · 2020-10-13 21:18 I wasn't able to read the website posted because of the horribly bad and unnecessarily-complicated user experience. If that's not on topic for your post then I don't know what is. Maybe you should take the feedback and consider the accessibility of the information you're trying to communicate. The whole point here is communication and you're doing something that works directly against that goal. I'm sorry to be so harsh. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tofazzz · 2020-10-13 22:04 This is the reason why I moved to FreeBSD a while ago. The performances that the OCAs are getting are amazing and there is always a solid development towards network stack in FreeBSD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dandedoo · 2020-10-13 22:13 ikr I think it's just a generic PDF/document reader? Dunno. I expect better from the freebsd foundation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dandedoo · 2020-10-13 22:15 Lol that's the exact mentality. \*\*posts an interesting article to share with others** "I can barely fucking read this" "that has nothing to do with anything" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-10-13 22:40 Harsh isn't the word I would use to describe you. Also, it's not my web site but only on reddit does this become such a distraction. Of course, reddit is just a bunch of gamers who wouldn't own a computer at all if it weren't for that so I understand. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antiduh · 2020-10-14 00:09 I'm not seeing you refute the central problem here, that the content is needlessly hard to access, almost pointlessly so. Try reading the content on mobile and get back to me. > Of course, reddit is just a bunch of gamers who wouldn't own a computer at all if it weren't for that Your insult doesn't even make any sense. Folks don't use FreeBSD for the games. If you've such a thin skin that you can't take criticism for the things you post without resorting to personal insults, maybe you shouldn't post on public forums? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-10-14 01:30 Nothing makes sense on reddit so I'm not surprised you can't figure it out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- alexishdez_lmL · 2020-10-14 01:37 Exactly, I mean, yeah looks cool but it's sooo annoying and completely not comfortable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kevans91 · 2020-10-14 16:08 Honestly, he could have said it better... the tone is a bit off here, and they could've sent it to [wwwadm@freebsdfoundation.org](mailto:wwwadm@freebsdfoundation.org) (harvested from "About Us -> Contact Us" in the menu) as constructive feedback rather than the pretty negative comment that's been posted here instead. The constructive version of this could have been: "The PDF reader used for the recent case study is hard to consume on mobile, and the download PDF button is not obvious as it's hidden behind a... three dot menu... at the bottom of the reader. Any chance you could add a separate link below the reader to highlight where one can download the PDF?" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wing-Tsit_Chong · 2020-10-14 19:41 this is a thread about the link, so why not discuss the format of it? Maybe he and I did already what you described? Also I would assume that thinking this is a good way to publish information correlates with ignoring feedback on said form. Try accessing it on a screenreader or other tools for sensory impaired people. I'm honestly surprised it doesn't say "requires internet explorer 6". Man this 2020, we have HTML 5 and css and all that shit so you do not have to commit such atrocities. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kevans91 · 2020-10-14 21:43 This isn't discussing the format of it, this is just complaining to people that cannot do anything about it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rainer_d · 2020-10-15 13:17 Is there are a way to enable kTLS with nginx? I thought this was not yet upstreamed? Or is it in FreeBSD 13? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MiaChillfox · 2020-10-16 00:37 It's annoying on a 4K monitor as well. Options are tiny postage stamp or full screen... But you can download it as a pdf if you click the download link in the bottom right of the magazine window. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antiduh · 2020-10-16 02:02 Yeah, that's what I eventually did, just download the PDF once I was back at a desktop and read the PDF. The whole page is a fail all around. I have no idea who thought this mode of presentation was a good idea.
