Gaming on BSD reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HelgiL · 2020-10-12 16:50 Is this thing exists? I heard about a couple of open source games, but this is all. (yes, I know, dumb question) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nofearek9 · 2020-10-12 16:54 [https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/what-about-gaming-on- freebsd.723/](https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/what-about-gaming-on- freebsd.723/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- psmgx · 2020-10-12 17:01 No shortage of posts about this: https://www.reddit.com/r/BSD/comments/56764s/steam_on_freebsd/ https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/what-are-my-options-for-steam-on- freebsd.68703/ https://github.com/SteamOnFreeBSD/SteamOnFreeBSD That said, Proton and the Steam client are officially supported by Valve on Ubuntu and Red Hat (Fedora), and Proton is pretty dang great at making all but the brand-spankinest-new games work on Linux. Several are released natively on Linux but you'll have to do some digging for BSD compatibility. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HelgiL · 2020-10-12 17:08 Oh, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HelgiL · 2020-10-12 17:08 thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meatmechdriver · 2020-10-12 17:29 My first exposure to FreeBSD in 2000 was watching my supervisor play [xbill](https://xbill.org) in a Windowmaker session running on his FreeBSD machine at home via an X server running on his office PC over a 64k subscriber line. Those were halcyon days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tofazzz · 2020-10-12 19:04 Unfortunately I had no luck in making Steam client working on FreeBSD for a game server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rahancid · 2020-10-12 19:21 check also /r/openbsd_gaming ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VaderShark · 2020-10-12 19:38 Follow this thread: https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/steamuxulation- redux.72140/ I tried myself and was able to play some of my Steam games, but temper your expectations. I was able to get Torchlight 2 and BG2 EE running, with some hoops. There is also https://github.com/oshogbo/fbsd-fnaify forked from OpenBSD, which can get something like Stardew Valley up and running, which I can confirm worked for me a few months ago. Plenty of emulators and engine reimplementations exist, granted it’s old school, but you can play games like Morrowind, Diablo 1, and Doom (checkout Project Brutality) granted you own the original games. Also there’s Wine, but my experience was lack luster. It’s not the first choice for gaming, but if you aren’t a hardcore gamer, you can enjoy a healthy amount of older content. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HelgiL · 2020-10-12 20:13 Thanks, this is very helpful ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HelgiL · 2020-10-12 20:13 That sub seems like almost a dead place... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- moon-chilled · 2020-10-12 23:55 SteamOnFreeBSD is garbage. Use [this](https://github.com/shkhln/linuxulator-steam-utils). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vvelox · 2020-10-13 03:13 Wine, wine, and more wine. Basically Wine from my experience is on par with that of Linux with no notable differences outside of some evdev stuff for game pads. Treat wine like you would on Linux and you will be good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- avgapon · 2020-10-13 06:07 I played a little bit of StarCraft / StarCraft II via Steam on FreeBSD. It worked good enough for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fuseteam · 2020-10-13 12:16 yeah i was wondering about this since someone mention freebsd has "tier 1 support" from nvidia ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Mhoram · 2020-10-13 13:10 It's not busy, but when ways are found to get games working on BSD, it's generally announced there. I check on it every week or two. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Alexander88207 · 2020-10-13 21:37 https://codeberg.org/Alexander88207/Homura ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Echo8ERA · 2020-10-14 12:44 Does multiplayer SC2 work? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Immy_Chan · 2020-10-17 16:00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABYUGI-G-RQ It's certainly doable
