UEFI support... fail? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xMrIs · 2020-09-22 14:26 I am trying hard to install the fBSD on a second HDD, (1st one with Linux) I even created the /boot/efi folder + copied the files, no result as the HDD is not even visible on the boot menu. I had the impression that fBSD can boot under UEFI but this probably is something 'experimental' or the installer is broken (mind I use the 12.1 -RELEASE, I m not sure if its a known bug) the memstick boots works fine anyway. thx **\[UPDATE\]** MBR boot works, my intention was to test the compatibility of FreeBSD with my desktop. Test passed ! Everything works fine so no need Linux on the 1st HDD, I just installed the FreeBSD on the 1st HDD and now works like a charm via UEFI. many thanks for the replies! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dddddavidddd · 2020-09-22 14:34 UEFI is well-supported and implemented [since 2014](https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base?view=revision&revision=264095). Motherboards often have finicky implementations, however, so it can be tricky to figure out what the issue might be. In your case, copying the EFI bootloader might be necessary but not sufficient; sometimes I've had to add a boot entry using efibootmgr (check out the man page). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-09-22 14:35 UEFI has worked on FreeBSD for quite a while. The installer is also good. Your issue is elsewhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FUZxxl · 2020-09-22 14:39 What does your partition table look like? Are the EFI files on an FAT formatted EFI partition? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xMrIs · 2020-09-22 14:50 yes , even tried FAT16 instead of FAT32, first part EFI second freebsd-UFS 3rd freebsd-swap , I even used the "AUTO" partitioning oh well.. probably I will bite the bullet and install as MBR under legacy boot.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FUZxxl · 2020-09-22 14:56 Please provide the partition table as given by `gpart show`. I need to ensure there are no mistakes. Also do a `ls -R` on the EFI partition and show me what you get. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- balkenbrij · 2020-09-22 15:12 Does efi even work with 2 disks? (assuming you also have 2 efi partitions, one on the first and now one on the second). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aGIFTedTroll · 2020-09-22 16:25 I am not an expert on understanding UEFI, but I think you would have to install the bootloader to the EFI partition on the first disk, and not making a new EFI partition on the new disk. The main point of an EFI partition is that you can put every bootloader into it instead of having them all over the place. So, in theory your partitions should look like this, customized further to your liking: Disk 1 ....Partition 1: FAT32 EFI sys partition with both Linux and FreeBSD bootloaders installed to it ....Partition 2 and on: Whatever you want (Linux partitions?) Disk 2 ....Partition 1 and on: Whatever you want (FreeBSD partitions) Further reading, although it is about Windows, Microsoft has an article detailing issues with multiple EFI system partitions: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2879602/unable-to-boot-if- more-than-one-efi-system-partition-is-present edit: If having too many (two) EFI partitions is the case, I would try reinstalling FreeBSD rather than copying boot files to the first EFI partition, as otherwise you might run into problems down the road with how everything is configured. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xMrIs · 2020-09-22 17:22 thanks ! finally works as MBR , not a big deal, I still can boot the other HDD so its fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2020-09-23 01:21 This is why I still run an old mobo with BIOS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CheezMagic · 2020-09-26 01:02 Have you tried to install into a virtual machine?
