FreeBSD wake-on-lan (wakeonlan) reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cmic37 · 2020-09-08 19:36 I was surprised that on 12.1-RELEASE there is not, by default, wake on lan for the ethernet drivers. As I browse internet and many forums, it appears that I have to add a patch (my ethernet is bge) to the driver, but it seems that this patch is only "almost working". Anybody has a same problem ? Any working patch ? Solutions ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2020-09-09 00:24 Why would it be a default? Who wakes-on-LAN servers? Or even desktops? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ydna_eissua · 2020-09-09 04:40 WoL requires telling the card to stay on to receive the magic packet after shut down time (simplified explanation anyway). How to get the card to do that will be different between vendors and their product lines, hence it is driver specific. I have a similar issue with my system which has NICs using the igb driver (last time I checked). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cmic37 · 2020-09-09 06:38 Hum. I came from the Linux world where this thing is "by default". I've never had to patch a lan driver. So I'm suprised that I have to make specific things w/ FreeBSD. (Warning: No troll intended !!). And I'am ready to patch my gbe (Broadcom I think) driver if someone tell me where I can find one.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 12Darius21 · 2020-09-09 07:11 WRT it being required to patch it.. That is not great but realistically it's just due to a lack of developer time because it's a relatively unused feature. It also looks like the patch has caveats so people are reluctant to commit it since it doesn't work fully. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cmic37 · 2020-09-09 08:52 you mean OpenWrt has this kind of patches ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 12Darius21 · 2020-09-10 08:18 WRT = With Respect To :)
