How long does it usually take before a port is compiled into a package? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hertzsae · 2020-08-20 23:44 I've been waiting for an updated package to become available so that I can finally rid my system of Python 2. The upgraded port was committed on August 16th (and a newer version on the 19th). There is a dependency that needed updating too, but it's port was also upgraded on the 16th. I expected it to take a day or two, but it's been four. I can always compile myself, but I try to use pkg's when I can. I'm just wondering what my expectation should be. Package I'm looking for: [https://www.freshports.org/news/sabnzbdplus /](https://www.freshports.org/news/sabnzbdplus/) It's dependency whose port was also updated, but still not available in package form: [https://www.freshports.org/www/py- cherrypy/](https://www.freshports.org/www/py-cherrypy/) I'm looking for FreeBSD:11:amd64 in the Latest Repo. Sorry if this is documented somewhere, when I've searched the terms are too common and I've been unable to find an answer. Thanks for your time ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-08-20 23:50 It varies from maintainer to maintainer so the best way to find out is to just email the maintainer and ask them about it. I've seen some packages come out at the same time as the port. Others mere hours. Others a day or two to weeks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vvelox · 2020-08-21 00:48 It can take a bit sometimes for the pkg repo to catch up to a specific point. If you always want to be able to make sure you have what you want at a specific point, I highly would suggest checking out poudriere and running your own repo. It's what I do as I have lots of various items with custom options. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hertzsae · 2020-08-21 00:58 I had assumed that the compilation was automatic after the port got committed. Thanks for correcting that. I'll reach out to the maintainer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kevans91 · 2020-08-21 03:18 This is actually not correct- the official package builders generally run back-to-back producing packages from whatever's in the ports tree. As you suspected, this is an automated process- it may take probably up to 3-5 days after a port/update is committed for it to become available as a package, depending on how unfortunately the commit is timed w.r.t. the FreeBSD version you're interested in. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daemonpenguin · 2020-08-21 19:11 Please don't e-mail the maintainer and ask this. We get a lot of messages as it is. The build process is automated and the maintainer doesn't have any influence on when the package gets built after their change is submitted. If the update has been committed to ports, just wait a few days to a week. The build system will catch up eventually. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-08-21 21:20 Yep, you're right. I mis-read his post thinking he said it hadn't been submitted yet.
