How can I set a specific drive as /dev/da0? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-08-19 05:07 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xzenor · 2020-08-19 06:25 So.... You boot from /dev/da0 and also have a USB stick on /dev/da0? That's..... Odd... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dddddavidddd · 2020-08-19 09:59 If you're using GPT on the drive, you can use `gpart (8)` to set a label that will appear under `/dev/gpt/`. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rhavenn · 2020-08-19 15:31 As /u/dddddavidddd said, use GPT partition labels and then you just use the label in your fstab and it won't matter which device it is. `gpart show` will show you all your devices and their partitions. `gpart modify -l LABELNAME -i PARTITIONNUM GEOM` will set the label for the GEOM (the disk) and the index or partition number. Then in fstab you can mount with: /`dev/gpt/LABELNAME` as the device. note: FreeBSD does it weird. GPT labels won't show up until a system uses them, so you have to take a leap of faith they're there. note 2: you'll find a lot of references to glabel for labeling disks or partitions. This is a FreeBSD specific way of doing things and isn't recognizable by Linux or Windows. GPT partition labels will be visible to Linux. note 3: this is going under the assumption you're using GPT partitions on a disk. There is very little reason why you shouldn't be, but not everyone uses them.
