Qutebrowser is a monster reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-07-08 06:49 Got a new FreeBSD 12.1 install for my Thinkpad T420 with a i5 and 8GB of ram. I decided for this setup Im going to strickly use the ports system. I decided to use qutebrowser as my web browser being that its using a stripped down chromium core (qt-webengine), and I thought it was lightweight. That was 26 hours ago, 26 hours later Qutebrowser and its insane fuckload of dependencies are STILL compiling. This is insane... I cant believe the sheer mountain of code that goes into getting us a modern web browser. How did it come to this? The web is too fucking bloated... Edit: It finally finished! The madlad little laptop, he actually did it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- uzsolt · 2020-07-08 07:17 Why do you use ports? Would be simplier to install it from package. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bsdlinuxnerd · 2020-07-08 07:17 There is no package atm. No package for firefox or chrome either. https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/freebsd-12-1-amd64-packages- disappeared-from-repository.76043/ Besides, I want to use ports. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- okapi-a · 2020-07-08 07:50 If you want to build stuff from ports, I'd recommend using synth as it still allows the convenience of managing ports with packages combined with using `make config` to adjust settings for particular packages. I use it on my NAS where I don't have so many packages but not on my desktop. It's much simpler than poudriere. I'll normally only use firefox but the one qt-webengine based browser I installed was otter-browser. There's also iridium which I think is closer to actual chromium but with reduced use of google services. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bsdlinuxnerd · 2020-07-08 07:58 I was planning on going with portmaster, any advantages to using synth over portmaster? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- moviuro · 2020-07-08 08:17 https://www.openhub.net/p/freebsd vs. https://www.openhub.net/p/WebKit They have some data about LoC count, though its quality is not exceptional. Still, the modern web browser really is a virtual machine. No surprise that is so huge and complex, and slow to compile. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bsdlinuxnerd · 2020-07-08 08:21 To be fair it was all the dependencies too, it pulled the entire qt framework, boost, boost-libs, ffmeg, gstreamer libs, it was epic. edit fuck 17 million LoC I almost choked on my beer... edit2 Google Chrome 25 million LoC, that is criminal, Im sorry, what tf. No wonder web browsers are such a security pitfall, the attack surface! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whjeon · 2020-07-08 08:59 Fortunately, I experienced it already with my Gentoo system. LOL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-07-08 10:19 Synth won't solve any issue like this for building a port. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-07-08 10:20 The package for Firefox was delayed and should be available now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bsdlinuxnerd · 2020-07-08 10:36 Thank you, but I want to use Qutebrowser. I invested 26 hours of compiling into that son of a gun. I'm gonna use the heck out of it!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nyanraltotlapun · 2020-07-08 10:40 Well, this is C\C++ world. Unix package management systems actually solving C/C++ dependency and build system problems. And how we can see - not completely. I do not believe that web have something to do with it. And modern webbrowsers is graphical engines with virtual machine. They a complex... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The-Compiler · 2020-07-08 11:56 More like compiling its dependencies, I'm guessing ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bsdlinuxnerd · 2020-07-08 12:01 Ah yes, the-compiler, you always get summoned when we discuss the project. Yes the dependencies were 99% percent of the issue, your project was like a feather to compile. Still I fought to get it built, it's mine, back off!! /s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-07-08 15:45 Yeah I was in for a surprise when I decide to try ungoogle chromium out ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vendion · 2020-07-08 16:50 Are you using the quarterly or the latest repo for pkg? I do know that qutebrowser 1.13.0 is in the latest repo but not sure about the current state of the quarterly repo. 26+ hours sounds pretty crazy, I've built it a few times to submit some patches against the ports tree and my two systems I tested the build on it took only a few hours each with qt-webengine and friends taking most of that build time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vendion · 2020-07-08 17:00 One big advantage of tools `synth` and `poudriere` is that it builds the ports in a way you can then host your own repository server (incase you have multiple boxes you want to install the packages on) or just point `pkg` to the directory and let `pkg` manage installing, updating, and removing everything. They even handle making sure that the packages get built in a clean environment. Using `synth` or even `poudriere` can be major overkill if all your using is one box, in which case `portmaster` would serve you just fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-07-08 17:01 I have used portmaster ever since it came out. Some complain there are issues with it but I have not had any of those in years. Many now recommend synth because it's simpler and easier--especially for noobs --but that's one of the reasons why I never bothered. I would probably steer you to synth from portmaster but only on what I've read and not what I know. You will have people recommend poudriere but you should wait on that till you have experience and a real need. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bsdlinuxnerd · 2020-07-08 22:28 I'm not a noob, portmaster is perfect for my use case. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bsdlinuxnerd · 2020-07-08 23:23 I built it on an older laptop. But yes I started the build at 8pm and it finished at midnight the next day. I used the -DBATCH flag and it built qt-webkit too so that probably compounded the problem. And there was a 2hr break, the network went down while I was out running errands. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-07-10 16:47 [deleted]
