bios loosing boot loader. reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- emacsandvi · 2020-07-07 15:59 I ordered a new sdd. but want to ask if it is sdd failure. I install freebsd fresh and after a few restarts the boot loader cannot be found. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- biocage · 2020-07-07 17:21 It probably is just a dead drive, but there are some things you can do to check. But drive failures can be intermittent so these things can require a little bit of troubleshooting to figure out. Can you go into BIOS after a failed boot and see if the drive enumerated/is present in the settings menu? Can you boot a Live USB/CD and see the drive and the data on it? Also, can you post your hardware configuration and the exact error message or a picture of the error? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- emacsandvi · 2020-07-07 17:25 When I go into bios it has the drive in the boot options but its #5 and I cant change it. I did a lenovo test on every thing and it all passed. When the drive fails windows boot loader is the 1st boot option. I have a w540. I got rid the hd already but it was something like /boot/kernel not found. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-07-07 17:47 Losing is spelled l-o-s-i-n-g. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-07-07 17:52 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- biocage · 2020-07-07 18:12 Oh, if you got an error about /boot/kernel (or /boot/loader) it indicates at least the early stage bootloader did load from the drive. So the drive may be ok. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- emacsandvi · 2020-07-07 18:14 Ok. I got the drive coming tomorrow. If that dont work I'll let you know. It boots off a usb image. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LasseF-H · 2020-07-07 18:48 English might not be their first language, and you clearly understood the question. So I see no reason to belittle OP, especially with that attitude. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-07-07 19:23 Correcting one's spelling is not belittling. It's educating. What do you have against education? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-07-07 19:25 No. Did you feel like an educated fool for a split second? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LasseF-H · 2020-07-07 19:43 Nothing, doing so in a helpful way is generally good. But your attitude/tone just seemed a little harsh to me, which can turn the “education” into something less helpful. It might just have been due to the medium, peoples intentions are sometimes hard to read in text, and I might have assumed the worst. Sometimes our comunities get a bad rep due to (seemlingly) overly harsh first points-of-contact, and that is amplified for non-native speakers.
