Use Slack from Emacs? reddit / emacs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SEgopher · 2022-10-13 00:53 I chan check my mail and takes notes from Emacs, but I still have to switch applications to do all my work chats. Has anyone worked on a solution for using Slack from within emacs? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ieure · 2022-10-13 00:56 https://github.com/yuya373/emacs-slack I use it daily. It's both not very good and also hugely preferable to the nightmare hellscape of the official client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- timmymayes · 2022-10-13 01:42 :O Perfect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- okeefe · 2022-10-13 02:14 Another alternative is combining [bitlbee](https://www.bitlbee.org/main.php/news.r.html) with [slack- libpurple](https://github.com/dylex/slack-libpurple) and using an emacs IRC client, such as the built-in [ERC](https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/ERC). I used this back when I wanted both Discord and Slack available in the same emacs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sg_9 · 2022-10-13 02:19 this is how emacs users prefer their programs. with all the wires exposed ---------------------------------------------------------------------- harizvi · 2022-10-13 02:33 What’s the recipe for discord? Any links, I’ve tried searching but came up empty. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- okeefe · 2022-10-13 02:59 It looks like [sm00th/bitlbee- discord](https://github.com/sm00th/bitlbee-discord) hasn't been updated in while, but I still use it. The current state pre-dates Discord threads, so if you're on a thread-heavy server it's not very useful. Bitlbee itself is a bit annoying to configure as well. I find that removing channels is kind of unstable (ERC disconnects), so often I'll hack on my account's xml file if I need to remove a channel. Note that if you're combining this with slack-libpurple, you need a special libpurple build of bitlbee. If you're using just bitlbee- discord, you don't need the libpurple build. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CannibalismIsNatural · 2022-10-13 15:13 I love this description. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lianacrossk7n · 2022-10-13 15:55 how is the thread support in emacs-slack? I've tried several other alternatives and they usually fall short: - weeslack (https://github.com/wee-slack/wee-slack): type /thread a1c to open a privmsg with the threads. it's ok - irccloud (https://www.irccloud.com/): similar to the official client in threading and web-based. using irccloud as an IRC BNC to slack causes threaded messages to be posted to the main channel - ripcord: (https://cancel.fm/ripcord/) shareware discord client with slack support. this is very usable and has a lot of potential but development is stalled. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ieure · 2022-10-13 16:52 It's fine, threads are essentially the same as channels or DMs. They open in a new buffer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phylixer · 2022-10-13 18:46 Didn’t work for me, enterprise restricted or sth. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sebhoagie · 2022-10-14 17:19 yeah after reading this post I gave it a try but it hangs for me when I run the start function =/
