GNU Emacs internals reddit / emacs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- celeritasCelery · 2022-06-15 19:30 I found these doc's while searching the web for some details about Emacs internals. They are really good! I have never seen these details documented anywhere, so this was an awesome intro. There is a bunch of other good stuff in these docs as well. https://emacsdocs.org/docs/elisp/GNU-Emacs-Internals https://emacsdocs.org/docs/elisp/Tips ---------------------------------------------------------------------- franburstall · 2022-06-15 19:56 Yup. These docs are in your emacs also: do `C-h i` and choose the Elisp Reference Manual. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- celeritasCelery · 2022-06-15 21:02 Really? I don't see "Elisp Reference Manual" in the info page. However I looked into it more and you are right about one thing: These docs are not "new" they are just the standard docs repackaged in more useful form. For example here is the page I found. https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/elisp/GNU-Emacs- Internals.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thblt · 2022-06-15 21:39 Do you happen to use a Debian-based distro ? Emacs docs are non-free under the DFSG and are packaged separately. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- celeritasCelery · 2022-06-15 22:20 MacOS with Emacs-plus ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RobThorpe · 2022-06-15 23:31 In that case it seems weird that it doesn't ship with them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cretan_bull · 2022-06-15 23:43 Try `M-x info-display-manual elisp ` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fazalmajid · 2022-06-15 23:44 Also worth reading [The Craft of Text Editing—Emacs for the Modern World](http://www.finseth.com/craft/) by Craig Finseth. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ironykarl · 2022-06-16 00:06 I hate to ask, but would you mind writing a little review of it? I'd just like to know what the book is about (in *your* opinion), and why it's worth reading today ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loopsdeer · 2022-06-16 01:40 It's about some of the fundamental software design patterns that Emacs uses and how they make it what it is. That Emacs is a 50 year old, free, community driven monolith in heavy use today should be enough to pique the interest of anyone who has experienced any software lifecycle. A lot of the patterns are pretty specific to text editors but there is also plenty to learn in terms of general extensibility ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oantolin · 2022-06-16 03:34 > hese docs are not "new" they are just the standard docs repackaged in more useful form. I disagree, I'd just say "repackaged". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _viz_ · 2022-06-16 04:14 Agreed. And they are worse than the GNU website when viewed in eww. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- celeritasCelery · 2022-06-16 04:34 Having a side bar and a search bar is pretty useful IMHO ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oantolin · 2022-06-16 04:35 Searching is easy and convenient in the info manual that comes with Emacs too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ekd123 · 2022-06-16 04:53 It’s a known issue with a workaround. https://github.com/d12frosted/homebrew-emacs-plus/issues/437
