Using emacs default bindings in evil insert state made my emacs usage so much easier and better reddit / emacs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LowCom · 2022-06-03 09:05 Now I don't need to memorise evil versions of all packages like org, dired etc and can just use emacs versions in insert mode. All I will be giving up or 4 or 5 vim insert mode keys that I can easily find alternatives for as I have the entire power of emacs editing at hand now in insert mode. One annoyance though is giving up C-r for pasting from registers. I have to learn how to use emacs based registers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1nc0ns1st3nt · 2022-06-03 13:13 I had such transition recently, even to the point of given up evil entirely. But I still binded redo to C-M-- believe. As it turns out I don't use redo that often, therefore, binding it to C-r wouldn't be necessary. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LowCom · 2022-06-03 13:32 How to enable only C-r of vim in insert mode? Do you know how? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1nc0ns1st3nt · 2022-06-03 13:47 You should say evil instead of vim (the term) if that's what you mean. Anyhow, in evil you can unbind C-r in normal and motion, and bind it in insert. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- super-linux-nerd · 2022-06-03 14:48 I like vim keybindings but dropping evil made my emacs experience a thousand times more enjoyable. Turns out I like emacs keybindings too ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LowCom · 2022-06-03 15:01 How to do that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MitchellMarquez42 · 2022-06-03 15:26 Evil lets you disable all the evil bindings with C-z. The keymap is "evil-emacs-state" and you can switch back to evil with C-z again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1nc0ns1st3nt · 2022-06-03 15:29 (evil-define-key 'insert "C-r" 'evil-redo) (evil-define-key '(normal motion) "C-r" nil) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LowCom · 2022-06-03 15:39 Yes, but this doesn't work in practice. I have evil escape mode enabled and have very strong memory to keep pressing "jk" which puts me in evil mode. Disabling insert state bindings of evil work though as I can use all emacs bindings as if they were insert state key chords for vim. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reddit_clone · 2022-06-03 23:29 The one I miss most is C-e to go the end of line. In evil normal mode it just scrolls up by a line? I find typing '$' a bit tedious to go to end of line because I can't touch type the Num/Symbols row and have to look down. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LowCom · 2022-06-04 01:46 I don't want redo. I want to paste from register in insert mode while disablilng all other evil insert state bindings. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1nc0ns1st3nt · 2022-06-04 09:26 Well, actually I don't know what paste from registers is. So why don't you use describe function (should be C-h f), to find out (you might need completion packages enabled to get the best discoverabilities) the name of the function and use that instead. Good luck :)
