Getting spell checker to work - emacs-plus on Mac reddit / emacs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- torte13 · 2022-04-08 21:18 I am on an Apple Silicon Mac and following the discussions and recommendations [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/lijn31/ best_emacs_port_for_mac_early_2021_edition/) I installed emacs-plus via Homebrew. Overall everything works well except that I cannot get the spell checker to work. I installed aspell (also via homebrew) but when I add `(add-hook 'text-mode-hook 'flyspell-mode)` I get the following error message: Error enabling Flyspell mode: (Searching for program No such file or directory ispell) It appears emacs does not look for aspell in the right path. Ant advice how to get this to work? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Alan_Shutko · 2022-04-08 21:39 It looks like it's defaulting to ispell, which is different from aspell. Try customizing `ispell-program-name` (set to "aspell" in my config). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TrepidTurtle · 2022-04-08 22:24 Also make sure your path is set correctly, i.e. Emacs can find wherever you installed aspell. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- redguardtoo · 2022-04-09 03:07 Use homebrew, `brew install aspell` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ReallyRussell · 2022-04-09 05:19 set ispell-really-aspell to t install aspell (generally with brew) verify that aspell is in your path use exec-path-from-shell to be sure the emacs is using that path. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- torte13 · 2022-04-09 06:16 Thank you! That's what I did. aspell is in the /opt/homebrew/cellar folder as is emacs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- torte13 · 2022-04-09 06:18 >set ispell-really-aspell to t Sorry for the newbie-ness but I take it this goes into my .emcas file? Correct? > use exec-path-from-shell to be sure the emacs is using that path Could you please elaborate how? I am sorry, I am still new to this. Thank you!
