Emacs noob here. How do I get redo functionality in evil mode? When I hit C-r, I see "customize 'evil-undo-system' for redo functionality", but I have no Idea what that means or how to do it. I assume there's some line I should add in my .emacs file? reddit / emacs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- raedr7n · 2022-02-17 23:43 I tried googling it, but I don't know the right terms for anything, so I couldn't figure it out. Thanks for your help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nv-elisp · 2022-02-18 00:05 Interesting. What did you search (you should always include this in your post)? Searching for "Emacs customization" turns up several beginner friendly tutorials such as: https://medium.com/@thomy/basic-initial-emacs- customization-d33ed7361835 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wemmik · 2022-02-18 01:13 `M-x describe-variable` for `evil-undo-system` should have some explanation. If you’re running emacs v28 or newer you can add this line and be done: `(evil-set-undo-system 'undo-redo)` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Illiamen · 2022-02-18 01:17 Emacs before version 28 did not have an explicit "redo" command. Instead, one would just undo a change made by the `undo` command. There are packages that were written to add an explicit redo command, such as Undo Fu (https://gitlab.com/ideasman42/emacs-undo-fu) and Undo Tree (https://www.dr-qubit.org/undo-tree.html). Again, these packages are not needed in Emacs 28. That variable you found tells Evil which feature/package you want to use for an explicit `redo` command. For example, on Emacs 27, you could install Undo Fu and then customize that variable to tell Evil to use Undo Fu's `redo` command. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- raedr7n · 2022-02-18 03:37 Thank you! I'm running emacs 29, and this worked perfectly.
