Find out a great emacs package for structural editing. reddit / emacs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- saarin · 2022-01-23 18:37 [https://github.com/AmaiKinono/puni](https://github.com/AmaiKinono/pun i) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dpassen1 · 2022-01-23 20:08 Very interesting! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fromadarkcontinent · 2022-01-23 21:08 The state of smartparens has been a concern of mine for a while I will try this out to see if it might make a good alternative. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jimehgeek · 2022-01-24 01:49 This looks very promising. I’m definitely gonna give it a try :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 9bladed · 2022-01-24 05:10 By "state of smartparens" do you mean what is in the puni readme? As one who hasn't needed to alter HTML or the like (typical lisps, org- mode, text), can't say I've hit any bugs in smartparens but I'm always up for some further yak shaving. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FormerAct · 2022-01-24 08:17 Please let us know when this will be on Melpa! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kowata_Nobuko · 2022-01-24 08:59 Author here ;) It is on Melpa. I just forget to mention that in README. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FormerAct · 2022-01-24 09:07 Thank you! GOnna try it out! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arthurno1 · 2022-01-24 14:06 > It takes a different approach than Puni: instead of making use of Emacs built-in mechanisms, it creates its own extensible machine for parsing pairs, and extends it for many languages. The result: It's around 10k lines of code, while Puni is around 2k lines. Yes, that is unfortunate with many 3rd party packages, they don't try to fix broken/buggy things in Emacs or extends the built-in functionality, but re-invent the wheel from the beginning. Puni looks interesting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fromadarkcontinent · 2022-01-24 19:07 I use web mode for html, erb, slim and jinja files. The issues have been creeping up and I was trying to solve them using tree sitter, objed mode bindings and the like. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nicholas_hubbard · 2022-01-24 19:25 I looked at the authors other repos and found they have a package [clue](https://github.com/AmaiKinono/clue) for taking notes on source code. Im gonna try it out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vince_Vice · 2022-01-24 23:46 Ooh the slurping & barfing in html got me! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _pkal · 2022-01-25 16:46 > # What does "Puni" means anyway? > > "punipuni"(ぷにぷに)is a Japanese mimetic word means "soft", "bouncy", or "pillowy". > > If you are surrounded by punipuni things, you feel safe and relieved. That's my feeling when using Puni: never need to worry about messing up parentheses anymore. Wierd name, even if I get the idea behind it. Would you be interested in adding the pacakge to {GNU,NonGNU} ELPA? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unhammer · 2022-01-27 13:13 Interesting! Added it to my growing [list of Emacs structural editing modes](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/r0i031/comment/hlxwhyu/ ) :) I like that it prefers to keep the code small and use builtin functions. Considering the possible upcoming builtin tree-sitter support for emacs, would it be possible to use tree-sitter functions for puni?
