Introducing bbs-dialer reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Lee_B_ · 2023-12-10 17:58 I played around with minicom and some other terminal emulators a lot, but found that they just don't work so well these days, between having to emulate a serial port when I really just want to use SSH/telnet, and emulating a terminal and getting codepage 437 issues etc., when I'm already using a modern, advanced terminal like xterm-256color. So, this is a dialer/phonebook based on the well known unix `dialog` tool, that JUST runs telnet or SSH using your EXISTING linux/bsd/unix terminal. It presents the menu of BBS's, lets you add and edit them, saves them locally, and runs telnet or SSH when you choose to launch one. That's it. Pretty much. Everything should just work, thanks to modern terminals and unicode, if you don't select crazy options on the BBS side ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wndrbr3d · 2023-12-10 18:08 Always love seeing new dev for BSSs! Have a ⭐️ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ten-oh-four · 2023-12-10 18:18 Super cool! Can’t wait to try this out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Iron_Slug · 2023-12-10 22:22 Have you tried Syncterm? [syncterm.bbsdev.net](https://syncterm.bbsdev.net) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Lee_B_ · 2023-12-10 23:05 I did try it. It sounded like what I needed, but it didn't like my linux system. Something about SDL, I think. I had a feeling that it was maybe an SELinux thing rather than actually an SDL thing, but long story short I'm new to RHEL/RockyLinux and SELinux after decades of Debian/Ubuntu, and the redhat dnf repository stuff is bothering me, so I didn't pursue that much more. I do get the impression that it would "just work" if I actually got it running. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mercunium · 2023-12-10 23:10 Can it be ported to Android? A true CP437 telnet/SSH app would be awesome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Unmasked_Deception · 2023-12-11 01:32 I don't understand how to start it. I've installed Poetry and executed "poetry install" successfully. Typing "bbs-dialer" in the terminal window doesn't launch an application. Am I doing something wrong? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Lee_B_ · 2023-12-11 14:21 poetry install is for development installations. Instead, download the *.whl file from the github release and install with (best, but you need to install pipx first) pipx install or (not so good, can mess up your system) pip install. Really if using pip install you should set up a python venv first, so just use pipx - it's simpler and handles that kind of thing for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bitter_Art_9293 · 2023-12-12 18:28 6485 or Cnet? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Lee_B_ · 2023-12-12 19:37 > 6485 or Cnet? 6845? You mean the VGA chips? Wouldn't use that for connecting to BBS's, but hmm... might work well in my "build a 680x0 machine" hobby project :) What is Cnet?
