Finding BBS animations reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_hate_mahjong · 2023-10-07 04:53 I’m just getting back into the BBS scene. I remember ACID group doing amazing animations, but I don’t know where to find them. I’m using syncterm to access BBS systems. Does syncterm run too fast to be able to view animations properly? I want to browse some for both nostalgia and also inspiration. As a bonus, if anyone knows a good resource for learning TheDraw, please let me know. I never dabbled much in the art scene but I’m very interested now because I’d like to make my own BBS. Thank you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- b33znutz · 2023-10-07 05:52 Syncterm has great baud rate emulation. You can use it to emulate dial up modem speeds. In other words, make the ansi files display at the same speed they would as if you had that speed modem. For example in sync term if you were to set the baud rate to $2,400 emulation, it would emulate the speed of a 2400 BPS modem. In other words, slow LOL In syncterm, to change the Global modem speed, that is the speed of every connection you make using syncterm from that point on, go to program settings and change the modem/comm rate to what you prefer. I feel the 57,600 BPS is a pretty good emulation of an old 56k modem. But then of course you can type in 115200, 57600, 38400, 33600, 28800, 19200, 14400, 9600, 4800, 2400, 1200, 300... I think that's all of em lol Also you can make the same change to each individual entry in your dialing directory, depending on your preferences of course, by changing the comm rate setting in the individual directory entry. If that makes sense LOL ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_hate_mahjong · 2023-10-07 06:10 Oh wow, That’s really nifty! I’ll also definitely give that community a look! I always loved connecting to a bbs that had an animation screen. I hope I can put one in my own BBS once I figure out how to set one up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UCN_cyberstrator · 2023-10-07 14:28 I have links to the best resources over on my Mystic BBS sub but here they are anyways: [https://16colo.rs/](https://16colo.rs/) Sixteen Colors is an online archive for ANSI and ASCII artpacks. [http://www.roysac.com/learn/default.html](http://www.roysac.com/learn /default.html) ASCII Art Academy - Articles and Tutorials ---------------------------------------------------------------------- b33znutz · 2023-10-07 14:49 Omg I forgot about roysac! Great resource! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_hate_mahjong · 2023-10-07 14:56 Thanks for the correction. I went on ansi and saw a smaller userbase than I expected, but then found ANSIart right after. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_hate_mahjong · 2023-10-07 14:57 I'll give those a look now, thank you for sharing. What is the address to your bbs? I could check it out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UCN_cyberstrator · 2023-10-07 15:08 I don't have a BBS online anymore just the Mystic BSS sub here on reddit: [https://www.reddit.com/r/mysticbbs/](https://www.reddit.com/r/mysticb bs/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joshrenaud · 2023-10-07 20:00 Here's a useful direct link to the `ansimation` tag on 16colors: https://16colo.rs/tags/content/ansimation By default, it's chronological, so you'll see a few of my more recent ones at the top, including my parallax Millennium Falcon animation: https://16colo.rs/pack/blocktronics_detention_block_aa- 23/ANSI_Star_Wars_KM-FALC_.ANS (Make sure to change to 4X speed when viewing my ansimations on 16color, since they were created for modern telnet BBSes) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_hate_mahjong · 2023-10-08 02:24 Im excited to see them! Saving your post for future viewing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_hate_mahjong · 2023-10-08 02:28 A post so nice, I’m replying twice: what program did you use to make this animation. How did you get such a level of detail on the “close- up” asteroids (half blocks?). I really enjoyed watching that. Also, you mentioned it was for modern BBS systems. A lot of the modern ones I load in syncterm don’t display information that quickly for me - is that a setting I can adjust? Lots of questions but my mind is a little blown ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulLee420 · 2023-10-08 04:00 Already awesome answers here, but I have a collection of ANSi animations @ 2o fOr beeRS in the ANSi Story area of the board. ([20ForBeers.com:1337](https://20ForBeers.com:1337))... Also, you might want to check out the 'Break Into Chat' blog, and his BBS - that guy does awesome ANSi animation work... [breakintochat.com](https://breakintochat.com) Others have already posted awesome suggestions - hope you found some help at /r/bbs!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_hate_mahjong · 2023-10-08 04:32 PaulLee! Love your bbs! I don’t know how I forgot to check out the ansi section. And thanks for the extra information too! I vaguely remember hearing about BIC a while ago. I’ll take a look around their wiki. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joshrenaud · 2023-10-08 13:35 I wrote about the making of the Millennium Falcon animation here: https://breakintochat.com/blog/2017/05/25/new-parallax-ansimation- millennium-falcon-dodging-asteroids/ The short answer is I drew the various ANSI sprites and backgrounds by hand in PabloDraw, then used my own custom JavaScript code to animate everything on my Synchronet BBS. That code can be seen here: https://github.com/Kirkman/sw-milfalcon When you say you "load in syncterm", what do you mean by that? Do you mean you are viewing them on a BBS somewhere? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_hate_mahjong · 2023-10-09 03:44 Sub like sub Reddit, I was reading that wrong. I’ll subscribe ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_hate_mahjong · 2023-10-09 13:33 By load in syncterm, I meant that I view/visit peoples bbs’s in syncterm. Can this actually play if I were to try to view it on someone’s board? I haven’t looked at the code yet, and I really enjoyed reading your creation article. But you said you used Java script to make it work on your bbs? Do you mean your bbs uses a code that allows you to play animations like this one? Or that JavaScript was used to animate it? Sorry if it’s a lot of questions but I’ve been going down the rabbit hole of trying to learn how this all works. I’m still making the art/mock-ups for my own board, but I haven’t done anything with bbs software yet. Again, I really loved watching that and I really enjoy how well you have documented everything! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joshrenaud · 2023-10-09 15:35 I mean that the animation itself is accomplished through Javascript. I use Synchronet's Frame.js library with my own custom code to mask the frames, scroll the backgrounds, and move around the various sprites. If you want to see the Millennium Falcon animation, your best bet is to use SyncTerm to telnet to my BBS and watch it that way. In terms of "animation information" -- well, there aren't very many people making ANSI animations, either historically or currently. So there's not much to be found! Most classic ANSImations (ca. 1990s) are different from what I did ... They continually move the cursor around to erase/redraw various parts of the screen to accomplish a rudimentary animation effect. This is an old technique. Before ANSImation, there was animated ATASCII, for example, which used similar cursor control techniques. You can see examples of that here: https://breakintochat.com/collections/atascii/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- b33znutz · 2023-10-10 02:07 Mine is a work in progress, but feel free to check it out of you like. telnet://b33znet.ddns.net:1337 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_hate_mahjong · 2023-10-10 05:06 Absolutely! I’ll look as soon as I’m off work and back at a terminal :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hhhuuugggsss · 2023-10-17 16:30 I actually have a couple on the BBS Wordle demo system: [http://bbswordle.com/](http://bbswordle.com/) The non sixel one works even in the browser.
