Just found this Sub - Software Question reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- feudalle · 2023-07-17 18:02 I never had an idea that there would be a BBS sub. I grew up on BBSs. I was even a co-sysop as a teen. Is there BBS software still for modern hardware? I'm familar with Wildcat and PCBoard back in the day and very familar with dos and linux. I'd love to setup a BBS with some old board games (My firm owns a small data center). TIA. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- toadstoolpp · 2023-07-17 18:04 mystic & synchronet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- feudalle · 2023-07-17 18:05 Thanks I'll take a peak. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zelionthunder · 2023-07-17 20:54 Personally find mystic fairly easy to get into. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 13_0_0_0_0 · 2023-07-18 00:08 There’s also a modern system called [Enigma](https://github.com/NuSkooler/enigma-bbs) written from scratch using JavaScript on the backend. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2023-07-18 00:19 Enigma, Synchronet, Mystic, and WWIV are all modern, and all can run on either Windows or Linux. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Traditional_Lynx_951 · 2023-07-18 00:41 If you want to talk about Synchronet we have a discord at https://discord.gg/CJH5jUGjQ where you can ask your questions... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- feudalle · 2023-07-18 00:47 Thanks I might jump on ---------------------------------------------------------------------- feudalle · 2023-07-18 00:48 Any idea if any of these support some of the old door games? Thx. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Traditional_Lynx_951 · 2023-07-18 01:01 What I really like about synchronet is that it supports almost every internet protocol. Email incoming/outgoing, finger, ssh, nntp, rlogin, http/s, irc, and more... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Traditional_Lynx_951 · 2023-07-18 01:05 There are several door hosting services which you can use to get more players on the multi-player door. The three I know about are bbslink, doorparty, and exodus... You can also host them locally if you have a older windows computer or with dosbox on linux/recent 64bit windows installations ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Distribution-Radiant · 2023-07-18 03:23 Especially if you're used to Telegard-style systems. The access controls, menus, etc work pretty similar. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2023-07-18 09:06 The secret is not if they support the old games (they all do), but are you running them on an operating system that can support 16 bit DOS door games? There are methods of running DOS door games on 64 bit Windows computers. One of which is using NTVDMx64 to allow old DOS programs to run in modern Windows environments. The other is using DOSBOX-X or DOSBOX Staging. That one requires a bit of work to get it going. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BryanLee35 · 2023-07-18 18:40 Hi Feudalle, I think toadstoolpp mentioned 2(two) of the most popular actively developed pieces of software that are being used by SysOp's today however I can help you with getting any of the older titles working under a modern OS if you're interested in using something you're probably already more familiar with... just use DOSBox-X or DOSBox-Staging as a telnet server or use an external telnet server and pass the connection over to DOSBox to start a multi-node connection. A lot of us here in this sub are happy to help you out with any questions you may have. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- feudalle · 2023-07-18 18:55 I appreciate that, I may take you up on that offer. thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- robertc19850209 · 2023-07-18 19:43 i used these instruction on debian linux, (written for ubuntu) but it works pretty much the same [https://www.maketecheasier.com/create-bbs- linux-with-enigmabbs/](https://www.maketecheasier.com/create-bbs- linux-with-enigmabbs/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- feudalle · 2023-07-18 19:54 Thanks for the resource. Much appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- robbiew · 2023-07-19 01:51 If you are looking at Enigma 1/2, you can totally run DOS door games: [https://medium.com/retro-future/lets-add-a-dos-game-to- enigma-1-2-41f257deaa3c](https://medium.com/retro-future/lets-add-a- dos-game-to-enigma-1-2-41f257deaa3c) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AviatingPenguin24 · 2023-07-21 15:15 I run enigma on my system Pixelgrounds.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UCN_cyberstrator · 2023-07-29 16:32 There is a MysticBBS sub here on reddit, if your interested..
