Change Wildcat 5 Telnet Port reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Otherwise-Willow6904 · 2023-06-30 18:34 I want to be able to run WINServer door games but I'm pretty sure you can't get the games to run under other BBS software packages, lik Synchronet for example. (If someone knows a way, please let me know!) I happen to own Wildcat 5. I am able to strip it down so it only shows the door menu. I basically use telegate.js to jump from Synchronet to Wildcat. My issue is Wildcat uses PORT 23, I need to change it. Does anyone know how to change the default telnet port on Wildcat 5? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ten-oh-four · 2023-06-30 19:36 Interesting - I’m also keen to host some Wildcat doors for my BBS and I also own WC4, WC5, and Winserver 8. My question for you is, do you have some sort of rlogin thing or method for automatically creating users so that users can hit the Wildcat doors without going through an additional user creation step? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bucko2109 · 2023-06-30 19:49 The short answer is no. It is locked to 23 in later versions you can change it. What you can do is what I tried when I was playing with putting my WC5 back up. Port forward whatever port you want to use to 23 on that ip address. You would have to do it at the router level. So if you want to use 6400 in the router accept incoming on 6400 but send to 23. Hope that helps a bit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Otherwise-Willow6904 · 2023-06-30 20:10 They do have to log on and create a new account. I'm stripping it down to just user name and password, deleting everything else. Wildcat is not very friendly when it comes to deleting things. I have a newer version of 5 (5.3 build 448.4) but I could only get one node to telnet in at a time. But this older version of 5 is not as easy to adjust. So I might go back to 5.3 again. I did try RLogin from Synchronet to Wildcat, it treated it like telnet and ask for user name and PW. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Otherwise-Willow6904 · 2023-06-30 20:13 Right now I'm running Wildcat on a second computer, so the locked port doesn't matter. But I'd like to put it on the same computer I have Synchronet running on. I left my telnet port on Sychronet at 23 so they'll will a conflict. Thanks for the help though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ten-oh-four · 2023-06-30 20:15 Ah, bummer. I really was hoping there’d be some seamless rlogin thing :P Oh well. Still sounds cool IMO. I have Winserver 8 but unfortunately a lot of WC5 stuff doesn’t work with it any more. The main thing that doesn’t work is the main thing I want to have working: Wildcat exclusive doors! It’s a shame. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vacman85 · 2023-07-01 00:45 I wrote a lot of doors/games for WC4/5 back in the day and when I got of it I sold all my source WcCode to someone and walked away. A few years later learned that the gal that bought all my code passed away I wish I had kept my stuff now - looking back I occasionally see some of my work out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bucko2109 · 2023-07-01 01:15 You could install a virtual machine manager and rub both in vm's which would give you 2 different ip addresses. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Otherwise-Willow6904 · 2023-07-01 02:16 What did you write? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Otherwise-Willow6904 · 2023-07-01 02:20 That is the route I will most likely take. I've not done it before so it'll be a learning curve. Since the port is hard coded. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vacman85 · 2023-07-01 14:18 I wrote Food Fight II (WT-Food Fight II), 32 Fish, AI (AI50 - Artificial Intelligence), BJ-Menu, DTR (Deep Thought Generator), The Faire (basically another version of LORD), for the WT-LORD game I wrote WT-Shell, Sandtiger's Bar, Aragon's Cave). I was also part of the Beta team for Wildcat 4 and 5. When I realized that my ability to earn more money was not going to be in the BBS universe, I sold all my stuff to Janet Terry who re- released most of my games under her name and that was that. If you do a little digging, you can figure out what my real name is and then search for stuff written by me. I would love to see some of my original source code (if for no other reason than to see how badly the code was written by me - lol). But I got in touch with Janet's daughter after I learned she had passed and she said that she no longer had anything - so all is lost to history on that front. I was especially proud of the Food Fight game and the Artificial Intelligence games. Neither were particularly unique (I paid the original author of Food Fight to have the rights to recreate the game as it was originally written in Turbo Pascal). And the idea for the A.I. game I derived from a book I read (CyberPunk - Katie Hafner and John Markoff) about early hackers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Otherwise-Willow6904 · 2023-07-04 04:36 I ended up setting up the virtual machine. It was actually rather easy. Well, once I figured out how to port forward the ip address. But it's now all running on one computer. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bucko2109 · 2023-07-04 13:04 Great! Glad to hear you got things going. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ten-oh-four · 2023-10-23 23:13 What is your BBS? I'd love to check out your WC setup and games.
