Moving to a New Platform—Maybe Lemmy? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheGr8Whoopdini · 2023-06-09 15:13 Given Reddit's current API debacle (breaking all third-party clients) and a strong suspicion that old.reddit.com will be next on the chopping block, I think it would be wise to have a backup location for people here to congregate. [Lemmy](https://lemmy.ml/) (a Fediverse clone of Reddit) strikes me as the natural new home for Web-based BBS discussion. Thoughts? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Otherwise-Willow6904 · 2023-06-09 15:48 Lemmy's opening statement says they're about to go down from too many users. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- slewp · 2023-06-09 15:57 I’d rather go back to IRC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- parkerlewis · 2023-06-09 16:10 I’d rather go back to telnet BBSs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheGr8Whoopdini · 2023-06-09 16:56 That's the virtue of federation: we can just put the community on another instance, or make our own. They all talk to each other, and to the wider Fediverse (Mastodon, PeerTube, etc.) to boot. It's a similar principle to email. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheGr8Whoopdini · 2023-06-09 16:57 I mean, sure, but that's not easily publically-accessible like Reddit is, which is the reason we're here in the first place instead of in an IRC channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- speeb · 2023-06-09 22:46 I'm a Yes on Lemmy and the fediverse. But I mostly just lurk anyway. However... Last year when Twitter was burning and people were flocking to Mastodon, I got to thinking about how to describe the fediverse to people. The best thing I could come up with (that meant nothing to the people I know) was that joining a Mastodon instance was like joining a BBS that was on Fidonet or something. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheGr8Whoopdini · 2023-06-09 23:33 A more contemporary comparison might be that it's like if Twitter/Facebook/etc. were run like Discord, where each community is its own server with its own administrators. Not a perfect analogy, but accessible enough to laymen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RonDiaz · 2023-06-10 04:11 Awwwww yessssss feed me servers and channels ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GrimpenMar · 2023-06-10 04:47 As far as I know, that's just lemmy.ml that is overloaded. Beehaw.org seems to be another popular general instance. According to [The-Federation.info](https://the- federation.info/platform/73) stats, Lemmy.ml exploded in the last week. Beehaw.org is going gangbusters as well. I'm trying out Lemmy, and I'll sub. Besides, have you seen this Lemmy client? [Neon Modem Overdrive](https://neonmodem.com/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Practical_Cartoonist · 2023-06-10 05:19 Yup, paulie420 (20forbeers sysop) has [already posted there on technology@beehaw.org](https://beehaw.org/post/435922). I don't know that the Lemmy community is big enough yet that it makes sense to split off a dedicated BBS community, but you could try it. Maybe a retrocomputing community would catch on. I know definitely there are a disproportionately large number of retrocomputing folks who have started using lemmy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShooterJennings · 2023-06-10 06:50 Me too I'm in #bcr and #tomcosm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- alfranex · 2023-06-10 11:47 I have a Lemmy account and a Mastodon account, but find that although I can follow my Lemmy account from my Mastodon account, I can't post to any Lemmy community I'm subscribed to from my Mastodon account, only from a Lemmy account. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheGr8Whoopdini · 2023-06-10 15:29 I've been trying to figure that out myself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulLee420 · 2023-06-15 00:00 I. Love. Lemmy. Net. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shifting_colors · 2023-06-16 00:39 I think it's a good idea. The SDF Lemmy (lemmy.sdf.org) seems like an obvious choice of home, given SDF's history as BBS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheGr8Whoopdini · 2023-06-16 00:51 Oh wow, they look perfect. I'm on Bookwyrm, so I can't make the community on SDF myself, but if someone else could do it and link it in a reply below, that would be great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shifting_colors · 2023-06-16 02:05 Edit: Sorry, I deleted this post by mistake. I'm deleting my reddit history because I don't like where the site is headed. I created https://lemmy.sdf.org/c/bbs, hope to see you all there! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheGr8Whoopdini · 2023-06-16 04:04 Subscribed! Can't wait to contribute some activity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- siathes · 2023-06-17 21:21 I created a community on Lemmy that kind of encompasses your post, all are welcome. Don’t want to step on toes just offering it up. Also didn’t find this Reddit till I started exploring all this blackout stuff. https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/bbses
