Going to setup a new BBS for my 90's website, what software should I use? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-02-16 19:39 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agent_uno · 2023-02-16 20:23 I don’t know if it’s even possible, but if you can set up any bbs that is capable of running the original Trade Wars v1.03 (the one with all the bugs) DM me and I will play the sh*t outta that! I love TWars, but it seems the only version anyone has (possibly the only one supported on telnet/multi-user bbses) is the most recent version. I’d kill to play the original! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Seroto9 · 2023-02-16 20:30 Dung Beetles ---------------------------------------------------------------------- auric0m · 2023-02-16 20:40 mystic has the best community support, and is east to deploy and highly customizable. it is also still in active development. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-02-16 20:44 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grenadeselfie · 2023-02-16 20:50 Telegard... because 90s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- veeb0rg · 2023-02-16 21:12 Trying to make this happen, not playing well but I'll let ya know if I get it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YserviusPalacost · 2023-02-16 21:19 BBS for a website.... BBS..website.... Something isn't adding up here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-02-16 21:20 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2023-02-16 22:06 Well, do you want a BBS, or a website, or a BBS that can also be a website? Synchronet does both. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- codefenix · 2023-02-17 00:45 Synchronet and Mystic are both fine options with active communities for support. Deciding one over the other might come down to asking, what are your goals for your BBS? Do you plan on customizing it? Both Sync and Mystic are highly customizable, but Mystic has a slight edge over Sync on ease of customization. How do you feel about modifying or writing your own scripts? Synchronet runs Javascript and Mystic runs Python. Sync does include its own web server, but really you can access any telnet BBS by embedding a ftelnet window on a web page using any web software of your choosing. If you haven't already, install them both and try them out. Install some doors, edit some menus, and customize the look how you like, and do this before you even open up access to the outside. You'll find out on your own soon enough which one you prefer working with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nhaines · 2023-02-17 01:41 2.08 should be multi-user compatible, but 1.03d almost certainly isn't. I need to dig out and scan my registration key letters for my own records, probably. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RichardGreg · 2023-02-17 01:50 Eez gosha! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agent_uno · 2023-02-17 05:58 If you can find a way you will be my new best friend! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro1337_000 · 2023-02-17 06:47 you can use the IPL baja with synchronet or javascript. You could even use python or perl scripts or whatever. I prefer baja for simple tasks (reading/writing to files, setting flags, security lvls, menu files, etc) and javascript for utility type tasks. It's a personal preference thing, but I went from running rg and iniquity to running synchronet and I had a small learning curve. People say I'm an idiot and I was able to do anything with it. Synchronet also has its own fossil that you can fine tool with some finicky doorgames (aka tame). Oh he mentioned telegard. I run the telegard website. Telegard is also a feature rich bbs software with a lot of configurability and and IPL for scripting. People don't have to run the newest bbs software that is updated all the time; it's good to see something different. Honestly, running something older might be FUN. Your biggest tool is your imagination and resourcefulness ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2023-02-17 06:53 If you are “on the fence” about running a bbs - or if you have questions about which between the three you mentioned then perhaps it would be better if you not run a BBS at all. You can make the three pieces of software you mentioned look absolutely the same to the caller with a little effort - and it IS the user you are thinking about when you sit on that fence thinking about running one right? Additionally, what does a server rack have to do with running a BBS? A lot of people run them and run them well on a Raspberry Pi .. I’ve been calling BBS’s since 1980, and while yes - there were a few times in the mid-late 80’s and up to 1993 or so where there might have been a need for 25 lines, there will never EVER be that need again thanks to the internet. 3 lines will likely still only keep you 33.3 percent connected and even then that single connection will be few and far between. Instead of asking Reddit what bbs software is good, why not shift the paradigm and just write one up yourself? Now THAT could draw some callers or at least get you some activity on an IRC or Discord server. But more than anything else.. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not put a BBS up using the stock ansi screens, or using custom screens with anything less than ACID level Ansi’s.. Want something worry about/ask Reddit to help you with? I guarantee you DOS type connections are going to pelt your BBS’s telnet/ssh port (whatever port that may be) so hard it will make your eyes cross. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- veeb0rg · 2023-02-17 07:35 I have got it working! I DM'd ya the info. Its definitely not multiplayer and currently not registered but it works. I've got it locked to one player at a time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro1337_000 · 2023-02-17 07:45 haha ACiD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2023-02-18 13:55 I have an old version of TradeWars 2001 on the Diamond Mine Online. I think it's from like 1988 or something like that. But I did get it to run. :) (bbs dot dmine dot net port 24) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agent_uno · 2023-02-20 05:02 Logged in and all available versions of twars are the newer ones. Noticed a clone version that I’ve never seen before, but didn’t bother. If you can confirm that one of your versions is 1.03, please DM me and let me know. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2023-02-20 11:23 I don't have 1.03 loaded, but if I can find it I'll try to get it installed and running. I thought TW2001 was even older than what you're looking for. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agent_uno · 2023-02-20 13:14 AFAIK all versions were called TW2002, but it’s been over 25 years since I regularly played it, so I could be wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2023-02-20 17:10 Actually when I researched TW2002 v1.03, it's an upgrade of TW2001. So TW2001 is even older. :) I'll see if I can get v1.03 to work on Synchronet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agent_uno · 2023-02-26 02:53 I did a little digging and it looks like there were several different versions that existed until 2002 became the de facto one. And the earliest version I recall playing of 2002 was 1.03, and then the 1.03d release fixed many of the bugs in 1.03 (which is the one I really wanna play again!) 2.0b8 had many of the features of 2.x but also contained a few bugs, so was similarly fun when the sysop allowed users to exploit them without banning them. Of course, the newer 3.x that’s compatible with synchronet is also fun as hell, but I’ve got a soft spot for those bugs :)
