Dockerized reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rsqtech · 2022-12-27 16:46 Anyone have any decent docs on how to get synchronet with the dos doors running in a Linux environment ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RolandMT32 · 2022-12-27 23:12 There are instructions on the Synchronet wiki. \*NIX installation instructions: [http://wiki.synchro.net/install:nix] (http://wiki.synchro.net/install:nix) Using DOSEMU in Linux to run DOS doors: [http://wiki.synchro.net/howto :dosemu](http://wiki.synchro.net/howto:dosemu) But those instructions don't mention Docker. If you want to use Docker, you may be on your own for doing that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SunosUnix · 2022-12-28 01:57 Pretty sure they are. Docker is just chroot with different steps. And I can't recall anyone running a bbs from a chroot ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jfalcon206 · 2022-12-28 03:01 What will likely have to happen is for the container to be given privileged access to serial ports if needed else there isn't any reason I can think that would require access outside of the jailed container. Worse case is to go full virtualization but even then you could do some routing tricks to keep the traffic segregated but able to talk between containers and VMs and the outside world or host network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ten-oh-four · 2022-12-28 05:11 Check out xqtr's new release with demonic here: https://jackphla.sh/new-releases-xqangrm-zip-and-xqdoors-zip/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- analog_potatoes · 2022-12-28 06:02 I’m not a Synchronet guy but I am running my Mystic BBS on Docker with Dosemu. Hit me up if you need any help setting this up. I am pretty fluent in setting up various docker configurations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- andy5995 · 2023-01-02 18:09 Do you have the Dockerfile on GitHub or Gitlab or anywhere? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- analog_potatoes · 2023-01-02 19:33 Nah it’s just internal. I can send it to you if you log into my bbs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- andy5995 · 2023-01-02 20:18 Maybe [bbs-io / synchronet-docker](https://github.com/bbs-io/synchronet-docker)? >Synchronet is a modern bulletin board software supporting classic terminal interfaces as well as modern web interfaces and other services. >The repository source is meant to build/push to bbsio/synchronet on Docker Hub. For the @bbs/synchronet utility, [click here](https://github.com/bbs-io/synchronet-docker-util) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- andy5995 · 2023-01-10 04:28 What do you think about using a docker container to build sbbs and then from that, build an [AppImage](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppImage) that could be run on the host? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jfalcon206 · 2023-01-10 07:12 For creating what we call in the industry a "Build Deployment Pipeline"? Sure, why not? The real question is whether or not COM ports (Serial) will be treated the same within the "AppImage" as that is a "Jailed" space for the code and Serial Port access is most definitely something that may require a pass with AppArmor or the kernel to allow the "pipe" to work between them. Speaking of pipes, that may be another way of doing it. Having a host-level process just proxy between the serial port and the containers. Basically, it's the same process necessary to allow USB devices to work with containerized applications - I've done it with USB TV Tuner devices to allow things like MythTV to work with an SDR device but it's just that much of a hassle. That said, that was the reason RFC2217 was created - to allow things like terminal servers to interact with serial devices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- andy5995 · 2023-01-10 16:59 I could only guess. An appimage is mostly the binary squashed with its required libraries into a single file. I've made an AppImage for 0ad and that can accept connections on a UDP port without anything special needing to be done. I'm reasonably certain an AppImage could interact with com ports... but again, I could only guess. ;) I searched the [AppImage Discourse Forum](https://discourse.appimage.org/) for 'serial port' and there weren't any results. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- andy5995 · 2023-01-23 04:18 A reply on the AppImage forum [regarding serial port accessibility](https://discourse.appimage.org/t/accessing-serial- ports/2895/2?u=andy5995)... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lmorchard · 2023-02-27 03:36 I recently set up my own [0xDECAFBAD BBS](https://bbs.decafbad.com) based on this image. But, it's missing DOSEMU. I hacked together my own Dockerfile extending bbsio/synchronet-docker to add DOSEMU and a few other tools. I got a handful of DOS DOOR games working with this so far: [https://gist.github.com/lmorchard/bc811a501edf105048a57fbb7ddb7f06](h ttps://gist.github.com/lmorchard/bc811a501edf105048a57fbb7ddb7f06) It's a little funky, because it looks like Debian dropped DOSEMU from package indexes at some point. But, this direct .deb install from a previous release seems to work. Once the Docker container has DOSEMU available, the usual Synchronet docs worked for me: [http://wiki.synchro.net/howto:dosemu](http://wiki.synchro.net/howto:d osemu) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- andy5995 · 2023-02-27 03:40 Cool, thanks for sharing the Dockerfile. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aztracker1 · 2023-03-01 06:53 Yeah, noticed that when I updated... also had some issues with the builds for ARM. Will try to get your changes in... not really that familiar with DOSEMU, will this module be able to live side by side DOSEMU2? My initial plan was to adapt the Synchronet configuration for DOSEMU2, as I also wanted to get ARM builds working again... [https://github.com/bbs-io/synchronet- docker/issues/15](https://github.com/bbs-io/synchronet- docker/issues/15) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lmorchard · 2023-03-02 02:11 I haven't tried DOSEMU & DOSEMU2 together, just DOSEMU. Though I have read that DOSEMU2 can be used instead For an ARM build, though, neither DOSEMU nor DOSEMU2 helps. For that scenario (e.g. on a raspi), you need something like QEMU to emulate the x86 CPU. I did that a few years ago, but lost the docs I used. I think it looked something like [the advice in this forum post] (https://web.synchro.net/?page=001- forum.ssjs&sub=fsx_mys&thread=10650). It worked, but it was slow and more fiddly than I liked. These days, my Docker container is on an x86 machine where DOSEMU works fine. And I'm playing with things like the TW2002 game server on a Win10 virtual machine on a Proxmox server.
