Boards with active communities for doors? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChristopherRoberto · 2022-12-25 05:10 I'd like to play through a few games like Land of Devastation and TW2002 again with an active community like the good ol' days, but the boards I've tried have had doors mostly dead or neglected, or have dozens of doors with 3 users split between them. There seem to be countless boards in this state. Does anyone know of boards that keep these games healthy, and have a sysop that maintains them properly with a sane/default starting config and resets when the game ends or has run into a post-game beyond a schedule? Ideally with people who play for fun, like TW2002 was probably the first online game to suffer from people trying a bit too hard, you probably know what I mean. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BizzyHaze · 2022-12-25 05:33 I would like to play TW again, haven't played since the 90s. Let me know if you find somewhere good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- codefenix · 2022-12-25 06:01 Most people that play TW2002 do so with helpers or scripts, rather than become immersed in the game. I assume that's kinda what you mean, and I think it's kinda a drag. Players all play different doors, and most tend to play the one or two favorites they remember, and one of those is usually LORD. LOD, even though it's a good game, gets overshadowed by other doors and generally doesn't attract players. Keeping doors healthy is usually just a matter of listening to players that request resets or report problems, and making sure the nightly maintenance programs run when they're supposed to. Other than that, most doors run themselves with little to no intervention, with few exceptions. If something looks 'unhealthy', you should let the sysop know. Regarding starting configs, unless a sysop knows a door pretty well, it will usually just have the default config. For example, a lot of sysops know LORD pretty well, so they increase the forest fights per day higher than the default 15 and add a bunch of IGMs. Other doors are probably less likely to be customized at all though. If you're looking for some special config, you'd have to take that up with the sysop who runs the game. I'd also suggest posting a local message on the board to generate interest in the door you want to see thrive. For what it's worth, I just installed and reg'd LOD on my board recently, with at least one active person playing. My board info is in my bio if you want to check it out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChristopherRoberto · 2022-12-25 06:44 >Most people that play TW2002 do so with helpers or scripts, rather than become immersed in the game. Yeah that started in the community somewhere between v1 and v2 timewise, first game I can think of to experience the ill effects of tryharding. I miss the more playful thing where you'd find stupid beacons and random scribblings in bathrooms and such and there was more interaction. Maybe it's impossible to go back, especially with Trade Wars since it went on to be played competitively for a long time. >Players all play different doors, and most tend to play the one or two favorites they remember, and one of those is usually LORD. LOD, even though it's a good game, gets overshadowed by other doors and generally doesn't attract players. I remember LoD as the shiniest hidden gem of the door era and I could never understand why it didn't catch on. Had relatively deep multiplayer but only one local board had it with a lot of players. It had a few tweaks that needed made, if I remember correctly, and give me some latitude here as it's been 30+ years, it had some sort of trivia gambling that needed removed, and I forget what else, but was otherwise great. Maybe it got worse with updates, I think the ending was still Soon last I played. Never got into LORD as I thought it was Food Fight with RNG events but it's apparently the one everyone remembers so maybe I missed the magic. Will play through it sometime. >Regarding starting configs, unless a sysop knows a door pretty well, it will usually just have the default config. Might have been a local thing, but as of TW2002v2 it was impossible to find a board with it where it wasn't goosed hard. That game always had a problem of progressing too quickly for good squabbles to take place and the goofy starts just made it way worse. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Taclink · 2022-12-25 15:07 LoD was and is one of my faves, but I have yet to get it working on my Synchronet board. Part of it stems from it running on Linux. LoD was FANTASTIC if you used RIPTerm! I have TW2002 on there though, and have no issues doing a rebang if you want to play or configuring according to suggestions, although my board falls pretty heavily within your parameters of pretty inactive. Centermass.Solutions I sorta liked LORD but my "OG" 3 games were Usurper, LoD and Tradewars. If anyone has any tips for getting either of those first two running, let me know! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nevarro · 2022-12-25 17:18 Stop on by the Realm of Serion BBS (https://serionbbs.com). The BBS has an active gaming community with a curated selection of games. Most notable is the Legend of the Red Dragon Tournament with prizes to the winner, Extreme LORD and the latest build of Usurper (soon to be reset on the 1st). There are other doors available like LoD and TW2002, some of which are offered through interbbs services like Doorparty and BBSLink. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jcd748 · 2022-12-25 19:10 Yeah, for me it was Falcon's Eye, Usurper, Tele-Arena. LORD was all right but just shallow compared to other games of that era. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulLee420 · 2022-12-25 20:34 I would highly suggest Serion BBS @ [connect.serionbbs.com:23](https://connect.serionbbs.com:23) ; his entire board is door-game related and they run tounaments on many of the most popular games. Another runner-up is Constructive Chaos @ [conchaos.synchro.net:23](https://conchaos.synchro.net:23) ; while this board isn't only about door games, he has a really nice selection and local users that play in the games. If yer just looking for the MOST door games, or doors that won't be found anywhere else, I'd suggest Danger Bay @ [dangerbaybbs.dyndns.org:1337](https://dangerbaybbs.dyndns.org:1337) . He has \*THOUSANDS\* of actively installed door games, and theres a Door Game Museum that allows you to browse thru all of them, download them and see player guides / readme's of the doors in the museum. Hope this helped a bit ... happy bbSing in 2o23!!! pAULIE42o 2o fOr beeRS bbS [20ForBeers.com:1337](https://20ForBeers.com:1337) /s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- veeb0rg · 2022-12-25 23:34 You can also find a BBS that's part of BBSLink, it is a networked door games network. Multiple bbs's can play on one instance of the game. Makes for a more populated game. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2022-12-26 11:26 The Diamond Mine Online ([bbs.dmine.net](https://bbs.dmine.net) port 24) is a very active community. We have about 30 local doors, and via BBSLink and DoorParty we have access to over 200 more.
