Valhalla BBS reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Freddy_Pharkas · 2022-11-29 00:26 After 30 or so years away from BBS's I wanted to get back into the scene, and Valhalla was the first I stumbled upon, earlier this year. Found that out that this Sysop passed away this month, after trying to log in today. He was clearly proud of what he accomplished back in the day and kept it going since then. He had this news article posted on his FB page. I had limited interactions with him; really nice guy. Rest in peace. https://preview.redd.it/k8p8zi3pas2a1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=we bp&s=107c5b1b48ec61e23371ad8838b971ffd68e7038 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the_darkener · 2022-11-29 00:52 That's awesome, thank you for sharing this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BizzyHaze · 2022-11-29 01:43 Enjoyed the article. RIP ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joshrenaud · 2022-11-29 02:58 Oh, wow, that's a great profile. I need to add a link to this to the [reminiscence](https://breakintochat.com/blog/2022/11/23/ruminations- on-jadzia-c-g-and-our-ephemeral-digital-lives/) I posted last week. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- caress-of-steel · 2022-11-29 07:03 RIP. Cool article and awesome BBS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RolandMT32 · 2022-11-29 07:08 Sad to hear of his passing ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2022-11-29 09:55 He was a good guy. Only lived an hour south of where I live now. I may have called his BBSes back in the early 90s when all we had was dial up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dngraham37 · 2022-11-29 12:10 Thanks for sharing. If I remember correctly, he was one if the first in Houston to have a hard drive (20 meg) on his BBS back in the 80s. RIP ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mylaptopisburningme · 2022-11-29 17:37 Nice article, but I am assuming that is around when BBS's died for most. As soon as internet access came in, I remember more and more online users would be logged in for the internet, then less and less people once more internet providers popped up and better deals than a time limited BBS. Not sure how Valhalla was, it was just my experience at the time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kipio · 2022-11-29 17:52 Great article, thanks for sharing. Any idea when it was published? I found this paragraph: "He purchases files through a "ShareWare" program, where the owner of a copyright to a particular game or program gives permission to others to use it, usually for a one time fee of $20" brings me back to a time where most journalists writing local stories like this didn't have much if any tech experience, and clearly didn't really understand this new world of technology they were writing about. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Freddy_Pharkas · 2022-11-29 20:06 Hah, agree. I do remember going to computer shows around 1990-91 and vendors would sell shareware on diskettes. As a kid I didn't know that was wrong at the time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro1337_000 · 2022-11-30 05:44 he was a good guy. maybe i knew him for like 15 years? he was always interested in learning.
