Feeling nostalgic over Wildcat! 4 BBS reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-16 00:28 I came across my old setup disks and a friend gave me his a decade about. WIN Server is alright but for me, 4.11 was pretty great. I’m curious if there is any documentation on how a 4 system could access the Internet ? Offer Telnet connections? I thought, back in my Sysop Days and a Mustang Beta Tester for 4, they used something like OS/2 or the like? Who knows if any of that would run under Windows 10. But I was curious! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DadGameTime · 2022-09-16 00:31 Man I miss running my Wildcat BBS. It was so easy to run ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-16 00:35 I had that door called ROM Door (or the like). It would allow me to list all my 200 shareware CDs I subscribed to as available. Users would select what they wanted. I’d get notified and before the days of massive hard drives or CD jukeboxes, the software would tell me which CD to insert- it uploaded the files and bang, next time the user signed it, those files were there I also had Planet Connect. That was the satellite download service. Man I was getting so many awesome shareware files. This was just before Doom came out. So when those files came out, all three lines of my BBS were busy for weeks. Then the internet clobbered many of us in 95 I went to WIN Server but the web interface wasn’t ideal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-09-16 02:17 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RacingGoat · 2022-09-16 02:24 Can't answer your question, but I loved working with my Wildcat! 4 BBS. So many hundreds of hours tweaking the setup and adding enhancements with wcCODE. Wildcat! was my first - and only - BBS software. Made my educated decision in selecting it because it was the only BBS software on the shelf at my local computer store and I didn't want to wait to have something else shipped to me. Didn't really know anything about it, just knew I wanted to start a BBS. Bought it, read through the manual, installed it and immediately fell in love. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-16 02:26 Got it in 91. Loved it. Developer of TriBBS lived down the road from me so I enjoyed tinkering with that one too I miss having a board but then again, the effort to get it up and running again for zero calls would be a tad disheartening ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro1337_000 · 2022-09-16 03:13 you can use netmodem /netfoss you can use gamserv you can use synchronet to run it as a door you need to run it in a 32bit os ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-16 03:55 Ah didn’t know about 32-bit ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2022-09-16 08:00 Netmodem/Netfoss is your ticket to putting it on the Internet. [http://pcmicro.com/netfoss/](http://pcmicro.com/netfoss/) And if you do run it on Windows 10, get the 32-bit version. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- izzo34 · 2022-09-16 14:23 Man. I had reached the last guy to own it some years ago before he went Mia, and he gave me a code for it. I was all over messing with that. Sadly I lost the reg code and have never been able to play with tribbs again. Sad its gone likely forever. I mess around with wildcat 4 sometimes and the wins server demo now and again but its rare these days. The bbs days were awesome man. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-16 14:30 The last gent I knew owned it was “Frank”, I think. I actually got to meet him and we had several great phone calls (he was a long distance trucker so plenty of time to chat!) I’ll dig through my emails to find him/contact info ---------------------------------------------------------------------- izzo34 · 2022-09-16 14:39 Ohhhh please do! Thank you so much ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-16 14:42 I can’t find his email. According to Wiki Frank Prue owned it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-16 14:44 I checked this out. 64 bit is supported too. Is that better or worse? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-16 14:50 I’m not sure I have Wildcat 4.2. I think my floppies are 4.11. Need to find that. Any one? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HaveALooksy · 2022-09-16 21:21 I still have my 4.10 single node in its box. I started a BBS at 14 years old and ran it for 2 years. Learned so much about technology that my career today is because of that. Also made lifelong friends. Wildcat BBSs were my favorite to connect to. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HaveALooksy · 2022-09-16 21:23 I had the Night Owl CD with all stuff on it. Not sure people utilized it as much as they could. The BBS was focused on offering Doom WADs. Loved that era so much! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro1337_000 · 2022-09-16 21:25 that's not abandonware, so I"m pretty sure that can get this subreddit in trouble. Santronics is still around and wanting money, so watch out. does your wildcat 4.1 have reg\_code.txt in the archive ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2022-09-16 22:26 The BBS will run, but not your old 16 bit doors unless you wish to run NTVDMx64. And then your games may or may not work right. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-16 23:46 Me too. I had a Planet Connect (satellite downlink) which gave me the FidoNet file feed. So many Doom files. Duke Nuke Em and all of that stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-16 23:47 Figuring out which Old PC I want to put Win10 32 bit on! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HaveALooksy · 2022-09-17 01:30 I used Platinum Xpress for Fidonet on my board, though never thought to share Doom WADs - not at those speeds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- izzo34 · 2022-09-17 04:11 Ahh shoot bummer man. I can't find his email either. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-18 20:44 I thank everyone for the comments and suggestions. I guess my next step is getting a Windows 10 32 but license and installing that onto a PC. Then the Netfoss stuff. After that make Wildcat 4.2 will install and I can try to remember all those Makewild settings! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsLikeHerdingCats · 2022-09-20 17:51 Yeah I’m eager to revive it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 546875674c6966650d0a · 2023-10-18 20:47 Just found this thread... Omg I am gonna have to bring a wildcat! Back into the world again now too.
