I don't believe this is his entire fire archive. there also was one around years ago that was just a small collection of files that claimed to be the mirror. pcmike also has throttling and banning scripts that would block mirroring. so dunno. like he limits download speed to under 10kbps. it would take forever to grab these files, not to mention there was a limit per day to downloading. 2 gigs of bbs files isn't really that much. I can't remember how big his file collection was, he told me years ago. i did some comparisons tonight and it's missing some files on just the few things i've searched for. sometimes it's missing ones with dashes. not sure if it's because of the script or because the file areas have changed. what makes [archives.thebbs.org](https://archives.thebbs.org) so good is you can search for the files quite well and you can see the descriptions. most people have my file archive which has over 100 gigs worth of bbs files and registration codes and other file collections. looks like chickenshit deleted his reddit post ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wts42 · 2022-06-11 10:30 How would one find this file archive by yours? :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jcr21090_74 · 2022-06-11 15:04 A few notes: Not sure what the deal is with the user with the bad grammar who posted, but in any case I have blocked him. Sour grapes, bone to pick, not sure - whatever. No time for nonsense. He claims no one could archive it, then when someone does, claims it is fake. Classic. The site itself mentions ~17k files, there are 17,200 or so in my archive. Some notes: - I downloaded it over the course of a month or so using a custom script I wrote. The site had protection against downloading too many files at once or downloading them in order. The scripts I wrote grabbed the links from the html page and then called wget on them in a random order, and waited a random period of time before attempting to grab the next file.. thru trial and error, I was able to tease out approx. how long to wait at a minimum, but you couldn't have it wait the same period of time between files or it would detect that. Oh, and I'm sure I had to change the UA in wget to chrome or something. - IIRC the ftp site was never navigable if you logged in anonymously, it would just appear empty. I remember trying that back then. You had to go to the HTML page to get the direct FTP link. - There were "hidden" file sections that were not in the index on the site but the kooky webpage naming scheme they had was something like ra##.htm with the ## being a 2 or 3 digit number. Being the adventurous person, I tried subbing in other numbers and stumbled on one of them. I wrote a script to test pulling up the webpage with numbers up thru 1000 or so.. The hidden ones have -hidden in the folder name in my archive, wound up finding about ten of them. I don't think these areas were hidden intentionally- the design of the site leaves a bit to be desired. - Some of the files were not retrievable due to having special characters in the filename. Not many had this, however, and many of those that did had a pound sign in the filename which I was able to do some tomfoolery to get to download. Those are in the folder Poundsign-renamed or something like that and have underscores where the # was in the filename. These files are not organized and could belong to any of the other folders. There were a handful of remaining files with some other oddball character in them that I couldn't get to download no matter what I did, so those are missing. Not very many though, IIRC. At the end of the entire process I went back thru my logs and attempted re-downloading anything missing or failed, that filled in a few more holes. The site is over 99.9% there. I did my best. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulLee420 · 2022-06-13 01:36 Great job; thanks for sharing - I have SOME archive up @ 2o, but I will be sure to add this to it and host as long as I can. Appreciate ya. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HAPPY_FUN_PERSON · 2022-06-14 09:28 > Not sure what the deal is with the user with the bad grammar who posted, but in any case I have blocked him. Sour grapes, bone to pick, not sure - whatever. No time for nonsense. He's a well-known prick, bigmouth, and man-child. He contributes nothing and constantly badmouths everyone else's efforts. Don't let him irritate you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maxvideodrome · 2022-10-19 23:43 u/jcr21090_74 I'm downloading the archive now - thanks for capturing this BBS archive as the site goes down a lot and these files are hard/impossible to find elsewhere. Mostly interested in RemoteAccess files. Thank you very much - can't wait to open the ZIP file :)
