The 414's. The First Teenage Hacker Group reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kbuzz99 · 2022-02-23 18:35 I host a podcast on cybercrime and the topic of BBS' comes up when we cover the start of the hacker age. I thought this might be of interest to the group as the members of The 414's (the subject of this episode) had a private BBS to log their hacks and share passwords. This 1980's hacker gang in Milwaukee ruled the telephone lines. But what started as an innocent search for computer games, turned into a cybercrime manhunt. This is the story of the 414's. Sometimes they are a little babyish on the technical details but otherwise they are well worth a listen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kbuzz99 · 2022-02-23 21:17 I appreciate that feedback. The reason why I don’t go too deep into the technical is to make the show more accessible. I think cybercrime is fascinating and more people should be aware of it. If I get too far into the weeds, the general person might get confused. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2022-02-23 22:05 Yeah I figured that much, however I just kinda thought that some of the generalisations were really abstract in some cases and that most of your audience will probably be people in the Tech industry, regardless, I'll still be listening, keep up the great work! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kbuzz99 · 2022-02-23 22:32 Thank you! 🙌🏻 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cdtoad · 2022-02-24 02:46 Well I just subscribed and download your whole back catalog. It's strange but I never seem to be able to find podcasts is interest when using Google podcast search... find the best ones via Reddit and Twitter. Stuff never comes up when I search. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kbuzz99 · 2022-02-24 02:58 Thanks for listening! Discovery on most podcast platforms is terrible. Especially for indie shows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stlalphanerd · 2022-02-24 03:29 I’m legit glad there’s someone documenting - for a larger audience - a period of time and happenings that are important in history and are only widely known in small pockets of subculture. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2022-02-24 03:36 Have you seen my documentary on BBSes? It's called Back to the BBS. It's a seven part series. Part 5 of the series talked about "the underground scene": https://youtu.be/z_heZ-lgzq0 - thought it might be interesting to you as it is relevant to your podcast generally. The whole series is here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLop3s1hMlSJKXqmuFjK7gbJh2WAyllT TY ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kbuzz99 · 2022-02-24 03:39 I haven’t! I wasn’t aware until now. I’ll give it a watch. Sounds awesome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2022-02-24 05:51 Enjoy! It's certainly brought quite a lot of renewed interest into the BBS scene overall. episodes 1-4 focus on the BBS scene of 2021/2, not on history that much. It's not like Jason Scott's 2005 doco, which was a history of BBSes. This is about the modern day, although I have taken a bit more of a step down history lane from episodes 5-7 (underground, Demoscene, music tracker scene). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ebookit · 2022-02-24 06:49 Jason Scott is a computer historian not a computer scientist. Your documentary is better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2022-02-24 06:59 Thank you that's very flattering, to be clear they are different things. His documentary is a great expose and I would never compare my work with his. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the gargantuan amount of work Jason went to in order to make that piece. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cdtoad · 2022-02-24 16:49 No kidding... Working my way backwards through the shows now. Definitely going to get a good review on Google podcasts for me ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kbuzz99 · 2022-02-24 19:44 Psyched to watch this! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kbuzz99 · 2022-02-24 19:45 Much appreciated! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2022-02-25 01:49 Tracker music fans, the time has come! u/TDK_Chiptune, u/ctrix64 u/MobyGamer as well as Future Crew's u/ValtonenJonne and u/skaven252https://youtu.be/Xswbw18DPWM premieres tomorrow at 11:45 PST / 14:45 EST / 19:45 GMT / 08:45 NZT on Back to the BBS - Part 7: The Music Tracker Scene. A tour de force of how the music was made, how the demoscene adopted the format as well as fame and fortune with the games industry. This is a bumper episode that you don't want to miss! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulLee420 · 2022-03-05 20:04 Man, how have I missed your podcast for so long!? I see a Kevin Poulsen episode straight off the bat and the 414s - I'm in. Subbed, listening and appreciate. w00t w00t! pAULIE42o . . . . . . . . . . /s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kbuzz99 · 2022-03-06 20:22 Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2022-03-08 18:29 cool and all, but the 414's were far from the first. i look forward to checking this out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- textfiles · 2022-03-27 17:17 Fuckin' OUCH ---------------------------------------------------------------------- textfiles · 2022-03-27 17:21 If you go back to interviews I did then (like [https://www.youtube.com /watch?v=FnAO8RFLOgo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnAO8RFLOgo) \- 3:15) I said "I hope this BBS documentary is the worst ever made", because I felt that the entire subject matter had been completely blackholed and there would be no record of any of it. Subjects with a high visual/audio component (tracking, ANSI, etc.) are somewhat easier to get across and find a general audience. But I also went into fidonet, personalities of BBS sysoping, the commercial aspects - anything that could possibly slip between the files and never be heard of again. (I know you know this; we talked about it.) I'm delighted people are trying to come at the BBS world and its many aspects in greater and greater numbers.
