So did y'all know that SyncTERM 1.1 has sixel support? That's so cool! reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-02-02 02:51 I was digging around other things today and saw that SyncTERM did a _lot_ of neat things in version 1.1, including adding a sixel decoder! For those unaware (I can't imagine in _this_ crowd, but who knows), sixel is a bitmap protocol from DEC VT240/340 that is supported by a growing number of terminals: SyncTERM (woohoo!), xterm, mlterm, wezterm, foot, contour, mintty, and a few more. And now BBSes could use it! I'm clearly quite excited, I hope y'all are too. 😺 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-02-02 03:03 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-02-02 03:06 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crashj · 2022-02-02 03:21 Check out rasterm, it supports encoding most of the sixel protocols https://github.com/BourgeoisBear/rasterm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-02-02 03:27 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gstandard00 · 2022-02-02 11:33 Gfx instead of text what is this witchery ?!??? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-02-02 12:48 [The witchery is this. :) ](https://jexer.sourceforge.io/evolution.html) A combination of text and pixels, now with translucency (inspired by notcurses) and a much faster and higher quality sixel encoder (with guidance from chafa). A path that started in the BBS era and is currently bringing [DOOM to Xterm.](https://gitlab.com/klamonte/jexer/-/issues/93) And ironically, there is much better support for this now than there ever was for RIPscript. That screenshot is stock xterm. I am now looking at adapting for SyncTERM, but don't want to be a pest to deuce quite yet. ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- digitlman · 2022-02-03 02:05 My dream is for the BBS (server) to be able to send graphics (sixel encoding would be fine, but doesn't have to be) and SyncTERM would use that graphic for borders or frames around the traditional 80x25 (or whatever) text window, or have the text (or custom fonts/sprites) overlaid over the graphics. This could really put a nice modern "wrapper" on classic BBS menus, editors, and door games. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Taclink · 2022-02-03 06:17 Pretty sure you can accomplish that with RIPscript. Might be wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-02-03 13:38 Why hello! :) I love those ideas! It's incredible how just a small bit of images inside/alongside the text can take the whole experience to a new level. And can still be very performant on modern systems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WeimarRepublic · 2022-02-05 05:39 Any BBSes out there using it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShooterJennings · 2022-02-06 18:20 Yes… we’ll I’m not sure if it’s this protocol exactly but there are several that are experimenting with graphics. 20 for Beers has some in their experimental section I think and Quantum Wormhole even has an animated graphic of a Commodore 64 boot up screen they’re experimenting with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WeimarRepublic · 2022-02-06 18:35 Cool, I'm always looking to check out more BBS graphics experiments ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WarMerchant · 2022-02-06 21:01 Interesting, any software available for making art in sixel? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hhhuuugggsss · 2022-02-10 00:57 That's cool, I want to take a run at some of that. Just wanted to say you part of the inspiration for http://www.bbswordle.com/ ! Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hhhuuugggsss · 2022-02-10 01:54 I guess I'm going to post this as a separate post, but if you telnet to bbswordle.com I just put up a simple animation demo using SIXEL. Amazing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-02-10 16:42 You can make it in anything, and then convert to sixel via ImageMagick, libsixel, or chafa. For ImageMagick: ``` convert some_file.png now_in_sixel.six ``` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WarMerchant · 2022-02-12 17:50 Thanks xtermdoom! Going to check that out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- robbiew · 2022-02-15 16:41 Eagerly awaiting the first modern, full-blown BBS door with sixel! If it's not already here, I'm sure it'll be soon... also any other BBS term programs supporting this? Syncterm is awesome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RolandMT32 · 2023-03-13 17:41 I know this is a bit of an old post. But that could also be done with RIP (Remote Imaging Protocol). Some terminal programs from the mid-90s and newer have support for RIP, and I saw that SyncTerm should be adding RIP support in version 1.2, I think. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RolandMT32 · 2023-03-13 17:42 Sixel graphics are cool, though RIP (Remote Imaging Protocol) is similar, and some BBS doors support RIP. RIP also has support for things like clickable buttons, which I don't think you can do with sixel graphics.
