New SG Pro BBS reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BryanLee50 · 2021-12-21 21:46 Hey everyone, I've just finished putting together a new SG Pro BBS and would like for some people to try out the system using the new terminal program I've been working on ("SVGA Terminal") if you connect to my BBS you can download it from the login matrix window. telnet://sgprobbs.com:1337 Let me know what you think of the progress I'm making? Thanks to all of you in advance for your help. Thanks for sharing, can you give me an idea of what this is? Is the "SG Pro BBS" a... hazarding a guess here... Shotgun Pro? Are you actually rewriting a terminal or are you setting up a BBS custom and using the client? I have never used a Shotgun BBS before; did a bunch of other graphical ones back in the days but never Shotgun. Also, do you mind linking to a downloadable (web) version of the client? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BryanLee50 · 2021-12-22 02:53 Hey ImpingNinja, you're 100% correct it's a Shotgun Professional BBS I've managed to put together an SVGA Client that works very nicely with Microsoft Windows 7,8,10. I'm currently working on a version that works under Linux & Mac OS as well but I'm having some dependency issues (but I'm mot one to give up very easily). Anyway I'd like to get some feed back on what you think of the software so far? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agster27 · 2021-12-22 04:10 So far so good! I enjoyed! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BryanLee50 · 2021-12-22 05:20 Hey Agster27 thanks a lot for checking it out... I know the system might seems pretty basic right now (as far as BBS's go) but give me some time I'm working on some really neat ideas for importing world news section that will grab headline news articles from different news sources ABC/CBS/FOX/CNN that you can read live from the BBS... I seen someone do this with a MysticBBS and I've got an idea how I can do the samething... also the BBS now supports DOOR32.SYS dropfiles so I'm working on installing some really nifty programs that will expand the BBS a little further with that as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheLimpingNinja · 2021-12-22 08:50 Hey Bryan, would be happy to check it out, I don't use a traditional client so I couldn't download, do you have an online web link to the client itself? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BryanLee35 · 2021-12-22 14:01 I just placed a copy of the software you can download from my main website here: [https://www.leemagazine.net/software/SGT\_V210.ZIP](https://www.leema gazine.net/software/svgaterm.zip) Thanks for offering to help me test it out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agster27 · 2021-12-23 04:06 Awesome! What is it based on? I've been thinking how to bring the BBS experience to the "current" world. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BryanLee50 · 2021-12-23 16:14 Hey Agster27, are you asking what the software was coded in? if so it was written entirely in Boreland Pascal the BBS software was written for a MS-DOS environment and will run very well under Microsoft Windows XP, 7, 8, 10 32bit Operating Systems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MeldrakNailo · 2021-12-23 18:54 When you get the Mac version running let me know and I’ll join and test it out! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BryanLee50 · 2021-12-25 05:05 Hey MeldrakNailo, as you requested I've managed to put together a Mac OS version, I've tried this on several versions of Mac OS from Mavricks to BigSur so if you have Monterey installed I haven't been able to test it on that version yet, so perhaps maybe someone out there could try it out for me? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MeldrakNailo · 2021-12-25 16:32 I have Monterrey! I’ll check it out this evening and let you know! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MeldrakNailo · 2021-12-26 12:05 I installed and ran the dosboxsvn.app and it opened a dos box window. It just went to a command prompt though. Is it supposed to automatically connect to a BBS or do I need to type in a command. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MeldrakNailo · 2021-12-26 12:10 Oh and btw I’m in shepherd and visit Conroe all the time as my family lives there. If you ever want to have a mini LAN party at a coffee shop and check out BBS together hit me up! My email is registered on the BBS under Meldrak ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BryanLee50 · 2021-12-26 23:37 I just realized the issue I am apparently having with the package I put together...it worked on my computers because I had already previously installed all the dependency files on my machines however I can't seem to get the syntax correct for relative folder paths correct for Mac OS to work with DOSBox.... I just can't seem to get it the configuration file upon launching the software. If anyone out there knows how to write scripts for Mac OS please I would very much appreciate your help with this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BryanLee50 · 2021-12-26 23:38 Cool I'll definitely reach out to you....It would be just like the good ol' days of when people would have a BBS Meetup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MeldrakNailo · 2021-12-27 11:49 Yes! It would be cool to do a BBS meet up. Sorry I don’t know how to write scripts but I’ll be happy to try again when you get another version ready! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheLimpingNinja · 2021-12-29 19:19 Hey there, Bryan! Progress is good, a bit slow on the interface - but not deadly slow. In ways of improvement for the Software: 1. Adding instructions for people to change their layout for keyboard, I know DOSBOX and had to edit the dosbox config, but most people will not and the BBS world is international now. This kind of screwed me up trying to enter an email address! For the BBS: 1. File Area GROUPS need to be labelled, no clue what the difference between CDROM1-4 are. Maybe rename them into specific names :) Thanks for letting me try it out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BryanLee50 · 2021-12-31 19:15 Hey LimpingNinja, I really appreciate your feedback...this is the kind of feedback I was looking for. I've made those adjustments to the CD-ROM File groups that you mentioned, and I'm also working on creating an Install/Setup program that will walk a person through configuring everything for the Terminal but OMG that is a lot of work. Also I've been playing around with different versions of DOSBox and I found one that I really really like (DOSBOX-Staging) and would love to use it however the code signature isn't signed so Microsoft SmartScreen doesn't like it and flags it as potentially malicious even though it's NOT! But I wouldn't want people to worry about it so for now I'm sticking with the version of DOSBox that is signed and trusted by Microsoft. If you'd like to check out DOSBox-Staging you can download the latest copy here: https://dosbox-staging.github.io/ Just drop it inside of the MS-DOS folder and configure it to load the CONNECT.BAT file (same as in the previous version) this version is better because of the passive mouse mode option and Long File Name support also this verion offers better Sound Blaster support for audio playback which I needed.
