Setting up a BBS server. reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Plutonium · 2021-11-30 21:50 **Okay, before you say to ask Google for help, all that comes up is Airsoft guns.** I'm trying to setup a BBS server that is preferably ran on Mystic BBS (unless there's an easier option) for my Windows 98 SE computer to connect, due to Websites no longer loading. Unfortunately for me, no-one seems to help and now I'm here. Once the BBS is finally working, however, I guess I could make a post on it here. I know virtually nothing on how BBS's work. It needs to be a IPV4 connection as well, with NO domains. TL;DR: I'm trying to make it possible to connect to a Mystic BBS server via Telnet on port 8888. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dperry324 · 2021-11-30 21:55 Open the Mystic configuration menu. Go to Servers. Select Telnet. Change your port to the desired port. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crashj · 2021-11-30 22:04 I think Mystic is a great platform (especially for customizations!), but I'd definitely look at Synchronet BBS for your configuration on Windows. It's very well supported, and has a point and click experience out of the box. That includes supporting telnet by IP address and setting your listener ports as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Plutonium · 2021-11-30 22:06 Thanks for the suggestion. I'll be setting up the server later tonight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Plutonium · 2021-11-30 22:09 C:\\mystic>telnet 127.0.0.1 8888 Connecting To 127.0.0.1...Could not open connection to the host, on port 8888: Connect failed C:\\mystic> ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dperry324 · 2021-11-30 22:36 Have you started MIS? You're using your computer's home address so I assume you're trying to connect from the same computer. What does your logs say? also, I might suggest downloading and using Netrunner from the [Mysticbbs.com](https://Mysticbbs.com) website. I'm not sure if it will run on win98 tho. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Plutonium · 2021-11-30 22:48 I am connecting from the same computer, and it is hosted on Windows 10 but I need to connect on Windows 98 SE. I have not tried MIS, but where can I find it? Edit: log files https://hastebin.skyra.pw/acezavebuq.pgsql ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dperry324 · 2021-11-30 22:56 MIS is Mystic Internet Server. It's the central program to run all Mystic function: Telnet, FTP, binkp, ssh, nntp, etc. It comes in the Mystic archive. What version of Mystic are you running? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Plutonium · 2021-11-30 23:01 Version MYS112a46 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dperry324 · 2021-11-30 23:11 open a command prompt. cd to your mystic directory, 'cd c:\\mystic' run mis: 'mis server' then in a different command prompt, run telnet: telnet 8888 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Plutonium · 2021-11-30 23:13 It worked! Thanks a ton! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Plutonium · 2021-12-01 00:59 Update: Works surprisingly well, at the cost of looks I guess. I'd assume that could be changed easily. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- viroiddfi · 2021-12-01 01:03 Mystic is a solid choice. Enigma 1/2 is also pretty slick. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Plutonium · 2021-12-01 03:14 I’ve tried Mythic and Schyronet so far. I’ll try enigma tommorow morning. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2021-12-01 05:27 Here's a video install guide I did for enigma a while back. It's step by step: https://youtu.be/WnN-ucVi3ZU ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crashj · 2021-12-02 03:21 You'll find 8 different themes (shells) available for you to customize, some emulating key bindings and menus from other older BBS platforms, like PCBoard, Renegade and Wildcat. You can find them under D for Defaults and K for Command Shells. The Wiki has some great resources for customizing yours. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2021-12-02 09:53 Mystic is good. Enigma is also good. WWIV is also good. But I found Synchronet to be very easy to get up and running. You can't go wrong with any of those. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Open-Lettuce-4163 · 2022-09-06 07:38 I'm also considering a new BBS server on my laptop (for now). Synchronet and Mystic seems to be the two servers that are still being developed. I might run BBSs both Synchronet and Mystic. I might even run a land line BBS using a TNC and a 56K baud, or whatever baud, modem. I might focus on BBSs, less social media influence on content. BBS are not centralized like websites on the internet. I saw BBS servers, back in the '80s and '90s, as little electronic communities that do their own thing. Each night, they would send and receive packed mail and files. And those legacy BBSs were glorious. Finally: A BBS Sysop can allow or ban local ads on their server if they choose. BBSs are like the redneck internet of the '80s and '90s.
