BBS networks that are still somewhat active? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Farpoint_Farms · 2021-11-27 14:20 I'm looking for active, or semi-active networks to add to my BBS. If you know of any, please send me some contact info so I can reach out. I'm using Syncronet 3.18B now and it seems fairly easy to add networks compared to my old WWIV 4.23a setup! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crashj · 2021-11-27 16:55 fsxNet is amazing and very active, with BBS's all over the world. It's very easy to join as well. https://fsxnet.nz ---------------------------------------------------------------------- opicron · 2021-11-27 17:55 fsxNet is very active indeed. +1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2021-11-27 19:39 Fidonet is still active but it is like watching old men yell at passing clouds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2021-11-27 20:23 Yeah I didn't bother with Fido when I set up my board! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2021-11-27 20:23 I agree with fsxnet. You can't go wrong with tqwnet, retronet and araknet too if that's your jam. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2021-11-27 22:47 FSXNet for the win. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MeaTLoTioN_ · 2021-11-28 17:08 If you want to see all currently online nets (work in progress) visit [https://erb.pw/y/ftnnetworks](https://erb.pw/y/ftnnetworks) \- a document that NuSkooler started and I have been doing what I can to update it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AllEncompassingThey · 2021-11-29 05:58 This is a great idea. I need to look more into BBS networks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nelgin · 2021-12-01 18:49 I have 34 networks on my BBS ranging from fairly active to fairly dead. Feel free to log in and take a look around. You should be able to find infopacks for most of the networks, if not then I can probably point you to them. [endofthelinebbs.com](https://endofthelinebbs.com) telnet, ssh, rlogin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- voiceboard · 2021-12-05 04:38 Please tell me more. I remember fidonet from way back, but it's been decades. I happen to have a gray beard, and it's true, the fucking clouds won't get off my lawn. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2021-12-05 09:03 Here is where you find modern BBSes: https://www.telnetbbsguide.com/ And this is the software you need (remember ANSI? You need ANSI support) since most (but not all) are not dial-up systems but connect via telnet or ssh. https://syncterm.bbsdev.net/ Most BBS networks are coffee klatsches in which people talk about the weather, bodily pains, and how intensely they have refused to be vaccinated. Somehow, Fidonet endures. There are many others. In the years which followed the explosion of the Internet in the 1990s, a lot of BBS networks used Fidonet's protocol/scheme (Called FTN) to create other networks in which old people could be old and talk about old things in an old way. Fidonet is particularly crotchety. Fun fact: There are over 1,000 BBSes still active, and most are accessible via the Internet. A small minority still provide dial-up access, usually alongside telnet or SSH. Various hardware and software has made it possible to make old platforms telnettable, like Commodore, Atari, and Apple 8 bits. There is also at least one TI/Geneve BBS out there you can telnet to. Syncterm can handle PETSCII if you're a Commodork and want to telnet into an old C-Net or Image system. Also handles ATASCII so you can get graphics on Atari boards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- voiceboard · 2021-12-05 13:58 Thank you very much, this is extremely helpful! I will dust of my old NeXT and get cracking.
