Update: I got SSH working! reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- garyb122 · 2021-11-04 21:21 You know how I did it? I switched from Mystic to Enigma 1/2. Had it working in about an hour, vs screwing with it unsuccessfully for two days on Mystic. Now I have a philosophical question for you guys. What good is SSH if nobody uses it? I understand that I have “a responsibility to the internet” to secure my connection, and I did. But I can’t force my users to connect with SSL. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a BBS that offers only SSH, but I’ve seen plenty that offer only telnet. And since most users connect with telnet, what good is my SSH connection? To clear my conscience? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- overtrick1978 · 2021-11-04 21:48 So offer both? I don’t even have a telnet client installed. I’d never connect to any system on the internet over plain text. Regardless of the content. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ozyx7 · 2021-11-04 22:16 > But I can’t force my users to connect with SSL. First, SSL and SSH are different things. Second, you *could* force your users to connect with SSH: disable telnet connections. And why not? These days, who has a telnet client but not an SSH one? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thom_ftc · 2021-11-04 23:42 “These days, who has a telnet client but not an SSH one?” …the bulk of the vintage machines I use to connect to bbses have telnet clients but not ssh clients. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2021-11-05 00:01 Seconded. BBSes are routinely connected to via vintage machines that don't have the horsepower or capability to use SSH or other newer encryption technologies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blakespot · 2021-11-05 15:27 Because a lot of BBSs and their users are focused on and using vintage computers running, say, a 1MHz 6502 CPU that could not even get in the same neighborhood of doing SSH math.
