Any former callers of &TOTSE from its days as a dial-up BBS? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mct1 · 2021-10-01 21:18 So I've been going through some of my old logs and I realized that the logs and QWK packet I have in my possession may be one of the few collections of artifacts surrounding & Temple of the Screaming Electron from its days as a dial-up bulletin board system in Walnut Creek. There's just not a hell of a lot online about them from that era. There's plenty from when it became a web forum, buit not a lot from before. I'd like to preserve what I have as part of an exhibit on what things were like in that era, but I just don't have all that much saved myself. So my question to the lot of you: Did anyone here used to call &TOTSE when it was a dial-up BBS, and did you save any logs or QWK/Bluewave packets from that era that you'd be willing to share? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gene_wood · 2021-10-01 21:42 > Did anyone here used to call &TOTSE when it was a dial-up BBS Yes, I used to call it when I was a kid, my high school friend's dad ran it. I've been to their house in Concord with all the modems and gear, cool place. > did you save any logs or QWK/Bluewave packets from that era that you'd be willing to share No sadly nothing from that era. For anyone else that's curious, you can see the web presence of [&TOTSE](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOTSE) on the Internet Archive https://web.archive.org/web/20080207190854/http://www.totse.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mct1 · 2021-10-01 22:19 > Concord &TOTSE was in Walnut Creek. Try again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kweiske · 2021-10-01 23:50 I was a fellow NIRVANAnet(tm) sysop - I ran realitycheckBBS as a dialup NN node back then and polled &TOTSE for messages. I have some backups of the BBS that would include messages that were networked with &TOTSE. I'll see if I can dig them up, although they'd be in Squish format. Timed could read them, don't know about exporting them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gene_wood · 2021-10-02 00:11 > Try again. ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mct1 · 2021-10-02 00:22 That would be fantastic. I'm sure I can find a suitable reader and re- export them into something more readable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mct1 · 2021-10-02 00:27 &TOTSE wasn't based in Concord. It was based in Walnut Creek, but it did have a line in Berkeley. At its peak there were seven lines altogether (eight if you count the Berkeley node) -- namely in the (925)-935 exchange and (510)-524 exchange, respectively. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AchillesDev · 2021-10-02 02:05 Way before my time but as a kid TOTSE was one of my favorite textfile sites. Great memories! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kweiske · 2021-10-02 02:06 One of Jeff Hunter/Taipan Enigma's better rules postings on &TOTSE... Yeah, I think I have that post, actually. I came across it while I was googling for artifacts a month or so back along with a zip of the welcome screens shown on login. Doesn't look like many people kept messages from then, though. Kinda surprising given that big FidoNet archive from like 1998 through present that got posted just a few years ago. Just gotta keep shaking the trees and see what falls out I guess. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hark_flatline · 2021-10-02 04:31 Concord is literally adjacent to Walnut Creek. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-10-02 19:17 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gene_wood · 2021-10-04 14:59 This =) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-12-12 04:24 [deleted]
