RIPTERM hasn't appeared in this sub, am I the only one who remembers it? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DosGamerMan · 2021-07-23 11:30 I am surprised that a search for ripterm on this sub turned up nothing. It was great at the time on my 14.4, and still works with some implementations of LoRD. Not found a full telnet BSS that supports it, but do remember whole BBS's that were fully point and click in the 90's South African BBS scene. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rlauzon · 2021-07-23 11:40 RIP came into play toward the end of the heyday of BBSs, so it never saw wide use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DosGamerMan · 2021-07-23 12:10 Did not know that. I think I started BBS's around 93 until 96, left the country, and my computer. Got all setup in England with the internet, and promptly forgot about BBS's until the mid 2010's. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-07-23 12:11 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anras · 2021-07-23 17:49 Yes I remember RIPTerm, which I thought was really cool but I wound up not using it much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cyclop5 · 2021-07-23 18:15 I was the Illinois hub for RIPnet - I recall RIPterm very well. At the time my bbs had as many RIP menus as I could come up with. My biggest complaint (at the time) was that I couldn't afford a legal copy of RIPaint. But IIRC, there were other apps that could create RIP screens - they just weren't that good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- transizzle · 2021-07-23 18:38 I remember it well. I also remember hating it because it was slow and ANSI was just fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nevarro · 2021-07-23 21:21 If you're interested, there are still a couple of RIP BBSes out there! One is Black Flag BBS showing RIP screens from ACID. The other is my own with hand made RIP screens: The Realm of Serion BBS ([https://serionbbs.com](https://serionbbs.com)). I've actually tested the BBS against RIPterm 1.54 and it works very well. The main LORD game also detects and shows RIP graphics. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JJHall_ID · 2021-07-23 21:52 Thanks for posting this! I remembered RIP graphics towards the tail end of the BBS days, but I couldn't remember the name of the terminal software (seems very obvious now) that was used for it. Unfortunately RIP was just a little bit too late to the game so it died before it really got a chance to thrive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deffjay · 2021-07-23 22:24 I had entirely forgotten about RIP until now. Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gjhgjh · 2021-07-24 02:26 How the artist created the rip graphics mattered greatly when it came to speed. Some artists would correct their mistakes instead of undoing them. So you would easily see the mistake and then the correction on slower connections. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mycall · 2021-07-24 04:44 Which is funny since .ANS files were just text files, so they could have fixed it right. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2021-07-24 14:09 As a Sysop, I found it a pain to set up and maintain. As others have said, it came at the end of the heyday of BBSing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- talondnb · 2021-07-25 13:25 I vaguely recall that RA 2.4 had default RIP menus if you connected via RIPterm.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DosGamerMan · 2021-07-25 18:47 Thanks, will check those out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DosGamerMan · 2021-07-25 18:48 I only really did BBS at the end so the quite a few of the BBS's I visited had RIPscript enabled. Then came the internet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DosGamerMan · 2021-07-25 18:48 Pleasure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2021-08-02 20:07 i actually tried to find some rip screens a few weeks ago and wasnt terribly impressed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DosGamerMan · 2021-08-11 13:29 where did you look? Not really common any more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2021-08-13 15:28 google. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DosGamerMan · 2021-08-13 16:45 fair enough ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Agreton · 2021-08-19 07:53 I remember Ripterm. Sad that it didn't take off as much as it could have. I had found out how to convert image files into PCX images that could convert images into Rip graphics. Which allowed some of the BBSes in my local area to use for example images from the dragonlance books as backgrounds for menu displays. Too bad it pixelated them a bit, but it still looked great for the time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Taclink · 2021-09-07 17:17 RIPTerm and the whole idea was fantastic, the implementation was... wonky. The whole idea of cached graphics on the client side predated anything Netscape was thinking about at that point, and if you did download a BBS' graphics pack? Whoo boy it was fast AND pretty. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DosGamerMan · 2021-09-08 09:55 I loved the idea at the time. I loved BBS's. But then I moved countries, and got on the internet in 97 and I forgot about RIP and BBS's until a few years ago. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UnbelieverInME-2 · 2021-09-19 15:28 My first "real computer" after the TI-99-4A was an old 286. I had to ATH0 the blazing fast 4800 baud modem manually and use RIPTerm to connect to the Wizard BBS in Westbrook Maine ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DosGamerMan · 2021-09-20 11:40 Wow, thats a pretty unique system. My first was a 286 IBM ps/1 with my dads work 2400 baud modem. Then we got a 14.4 and that was great, although most BBS's were still only 9600 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brophyd · 2021-12-04 19:39 I remember this... Wondering if this was something Prodigy used at one point? Or ripped off. I remember being impressed by the Prodigy dial up service because it had graphics as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BrigandRansom · 2021-12-25 18:05 does anyone remember King of the Cats? it had ripterm compatible graphics and must have been in the Seattle area ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MathildaIsTheBest · 2023-06-28 19:54 I know this is a super old comment, but I found it looking up King of the Cats. I remember it! I was just a kid when I was on it, but I loved it and even went to two meetups. Such a good BBS!
