Old Dos game about phreaking / hacking system/s? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bleuge · 2021-07-02 21:16 I have a very vague feeling of playing a game like this, in text mode. I was sorting old Dos software today and found some very old games in text mode, many of them were made in Turbo Pascal or GW- Basic/TurboBasic. Seen these screens made me remember playing something like this many years ago. Does anyone remember something like this? or did I just fabricated it in my mind? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bleuge · 2021-07-02 21:17 I posted here because I am sure I downloaded it from some local BBS back in time, this not was the kind of game you could find easily or been shared by friends. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- richorr70 · 2021-07-02 21:30 None immediately come to mind except some of the old games like NetRunner. I am building something brand-new in this vein called \]baud. Early test builds are at [bbs.baud.games](https://bbs.baud.games) port 6502. It is a 1980's hacker culture tribute with Roguelike game play and a deckbuilding system for the actual hacking parts (along with some period trivia and puzzles mixed in) as you defeat the corporate mainframes. There is even a full fledged simulated Ascii Express Pro pirate board built into the game that serves as the shops. New builds of the game are dropping continuously. We also have a discord for those interested (updates, feedback and posting annoying bugs that I tend to fix pretty quickly). It was a Oregon Trail-like game. You had to do the strategy and figure out the puzzles, but it sort of led you through the "story". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Valdebrick · 2021-07-03 00:11 A quick search of [BBS archives](http://archives.thebbs.org/ra93a.htm) show two possible door game matches (which I assume can be played in single-player / local mode) [HACK10B.ZIP](ftp://archives.thebbs.org/door_games/doors_g- k/hack10b.zip) *B.B.S. Going to get some of these stood up on my BBS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-07-03 03:33 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- slimelia · 2021-07-03 10:00 Could be Telehack, a telnet-based hacking game? There's also System 15000, which was one of the first ever hacking games. Or there's Uplink, the 2001 hacking game by Introversion (I know this one isn't anything like DOS games but memory is weird) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bleuge · 2021-07-03 14:29 Thanks for suggestions. No, as far I remember this was some kind of game or simulator, downloaded from some local bbs, maybe around 1988-1991? Maybe it was later at the University, we had gopher and ftp access, around 1992... ? If I am not really fabricating this, I remember the game was text mode, black background but some lines or words marked in yellow or brighter white... Something like that. Also my english back in time was pretty basic, so it was frustating and I don't think I advanced too much. I think this was around phreaking stuff, using a wardialer to find bbs to connect, trying passwords and such. Anyway, it was so long ago that I am not sure :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bleuge · 2021-07-03 14:32 I know that game, but I am sure this was some kind of shareware, freeware game. Thanks anyway. Also related, but in graphic mode, anyone interested check Neuromancer, C64 version is the nice to try. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bleuge · 2021-07-03 14:32 Thanks!, going to try them! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bleuge · 2021-07-03 14:35 \>It is a 1980's hacker culture tribute with Roguelike game play and a deckbuilding system for the actual hacking parts (along with some period trivia and puzzles mixed in) as you defeat the corporate mainframes :D You won me, I need to try it, thanks ! About being a door game, I am sure I ran it in my pc, because I only had a 2400 modem in those times, and well, phone was pretty expensive in Spain. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bleuge · 2021-07-03 14:36 No!, but man! thanks for suggestion! Another nice game to try :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- richorr70 · 2021-07-03 20:32 It turns out it is hosted on a BBS so you can set syncterm to 2400 and live the dream! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- headtailgrep · 2021-07-18 01:48 Try www.darkrealms.ca click bbs Also they do have dial up. Why? 100,000 files online..... might be there. Seriously this bbs not only still has all files online (30 gigs worth of 1990's files) but working fidonet amongst other things.... a real gem
