BlueWave anybody? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Naetius · 2021-06-21 04:00 Hey y'all, I started my adventure into BBS's quite some time ago, I think it was like 1994~1995. At the time I knew nothing about Fidonet and fido-like networks (like Pnet in Italy), anyhow: I started messaging with this thing called BlueWave: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Wave_(mail_reader). I have very fond memories of it and I was wondering if anybody else around here used that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- braucifur · 2021-06-21 04:37 I did briefly. I remember they were a message packing program that was used on Fidonet. But I don't remember ever posting on it I think I might've read messages on it for a month or two way back in the day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iheartbaconsalt · 2021-06-21 05:18 I read megatons of QWK packets, but can't remember the programs! I always thought BlueWave was too advanced for my 286. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ScalarWeapon · 2021-06-21 07:39 The name rings a bell. I always used SLMR myself! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rlauzon · 2021-06-21 09:42 I was a beta tester for Blue Wave back in the day. It was the best offline mail reader out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bleuge · 2021-06-21 11:53 When the BBS I usually connected offered me a Fido address (node? point?), they put just 1 condition, I must register myself Bluewave, so I have to crack it. I used it sometime, then I got Internet in the University, Gopher, email through a DOS application, ftp... Sometime later we got http and Mosaic in a Sun workstation :D Those were other times.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- samalex01 · 2021-06-21 16:07 I used this often in the early to mid 90's. I never had problems reading my mail while dialed in, but our local BBSes were rather congested so I tried to do my part to keep them freed-up and check my mail offline. Worked VERY well... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- staticv0id · 2021-06-21 17:40 “Home of the Bwave, land of the fwee.” “BlueWave washes the SLMR away!” Don’t ask me why I remember the default tag lines. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- psiglin1556 · 2021-06-21 21:01 I remember all of those along with qmail. Silly little mail reader worked fine. They all were cool back in the day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Naetius · 2021-06-21 22:46 I remember it very fondly. It’d be very nice to get its sources released in the open. You don’t happen to have any contact of the authors, do you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Naetius · 2021-06-21 22:47 Thanks everybody answering this post: your replies really made me happy (and a bit nostalgic)! You’re all awesome folks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rlauzon · 2021-06-21 23:09 Unfortunately, no. It's been at least 20 years since I last talked to George. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- opicron · 2021-06-22 17:13 GoldEdit was our cup of tea :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mct1 · 2021-06-29 08:56 > I read megatons of QWK packets Are we talking packets from back in the day, or from modern boards? I find it depressing how few packets survived from the 1990s. We have practically the entire history of Usenet, and a big chunk of late 1990s/early 2000s Fidonet, but almost nothing else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mct1 · 2021-06-29 08:56 This. I had bluewave but almost nobody used it, so I just stuck with SLMR. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iheartbaconsalt · 2021-06-29 16:01 Nothing modern! 90s and earlier! I think I tried a Windows reader once. Gross. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mct1 · 2021-06-29 16:33 Have you considered uploading your packets to archive.org? Even if it's only from local BBSs you'd be doing the world a favor since so much history from that era has been completely lost. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gavinerickson · 2022-12-13 00:15 Yup that was my first experience of the net.. chatting to people in San Francisco from a squat in London, good times
